Next step for more power (383)

How deep are your pockets?

Remember the golden rule too. You change one thing, you have to change something else. For example, new cam? Better get new gears to match. New rear gears? Better get a new converter to match. Oh and don't forget cam changes will affect dynamic compression ratio (read - where your power actually comes from). It's about the combo. Not the pieces.

Cam selection is good for compression. Calculator says 8:1 dynamic at sea level. All your engine specs look good. One thing heavy vehicles benefit from most is higher (numerical) rear gears. I would get into the 4's. 4.10 or 4.30 would be great. If you do that. Get a converter. And no more off the shelf stuff. Especially Total Crap Incorporated. You can buy a custom converter for cheaper than an off the shelf. Trust me. B&M wanted 100 bucks more for a 3000 stall converter than I paid for my custom PTC unit.

If you have unlimited pockets?

Aluminum heads, with full port work
Match cam to max lift of heads (ex - if heads flow best to 650, get a cam that lifts to 650)
Full solid roller setup
1.6 roller rockers (good ones)
11:1 or more static compression - DCR around 8.5-9:1 (depending on altitude you might get away with pump gas) or if you have readily available E85 - I would go no less than 14:1 static, DCR can be 10:1 or more, no one has really found the "limit" yet. Some guys are running 18:1 static on E85. Crazy stuff.
Stroker. Make that thing into a 500+ cubic inch beast.
Headers to match, probably 2" primary with 3 1/2" collectors. 4" exhaust.

Congrats, you have a 800+ horse engine.

save your money on the intake, your not going to get neck breaking results by changing.
I've been run'n a Holley street dominator on 383's for over 35 years, I'm not going to change for a couple HP and a little torque.

Exactamundo.

Well if you have been running a Street Dominator for 35 years then you wouldn't have any idea how a modern designed intake works then. Trust me putting an Edelbrock Performer RPM will cause you to notice a performance gained instantly on an engine like he has and will allow for much more if he decides to upgrade other parts later. But like the old story goes though, You can lead people to water, but you can't make them drink it.

Read this months Car Craft magazine...has 383 build up....

I remember reading an article about a 383 build where he street dominator made more power than the rpm and Victor intakes....

How does she go with the 4.25 kit in the 383?
It's awesome! It's nothing radical, rwhp is 484 and rwtq is 492 , and I can blow the tires off at 50mph, lol, I have 355 gears, and a low stall converter, and it gets 14 mpg! MOPER on here did the engine build. Oh yeah , I have over 12000 miles on this motor already, not so easy miles either, and it was just raced, with stock polyglas tires, and b lousy 60ft times, o ran low 12s at 117 in 1/4

What intake are you running on it Todd?

Tom

The op already mentioned tuning. Don't underestimate the tuning. I was able to knock off a full second at the track with just working with the timing, and carb.
