Nooooo!

My question is this, why would anyone remove the distributor before removing the clip if it's loose to begin with? By removing it first would eliminate it falling off the distributor housing and landing on the floor or whatever. The OP could've saved himself a lot of headache and work by removing the clip before he took out the distributor. I've had clips like that and I always removed them before taking out the distributor

let's not focus on how we got here but instead to figure out how to get out of the situation at hand.

but that's good to know how you would've done it. that'll come in handy if you ever get a car and by some miracle work on it.

I've had those clips try to

First thing I would probably do is to remove the intake manifold. Just as a thought of precaution, if a clip is loose in the distributor housing, either pull it out with a needle nose pliers or duct tape it to the housing.

Like being on here Doggin People for how they build their motors?
Good Job Keyboard Warrior.
I've never dog people on how they build their motors, I did say how to prevent a clip from falling off the distributor housing. I've tuned up some engines in my time and I've had those clips come loose but I never lost one by doing what I said to do and that's either remove the clip or duct tape it to the housing that totally eliminates it falling into the engine or the floor, etc.

99.9% sure I dropped the distributor clamp down the distributor hole!! Huge thing too.

La small block 318

Looks like that.

So, should I start by taking the intake off first? Or sump?

Can't see it down there. Tried with a magnet.

I've spent the last hour looking all around the engine can't see it so my only guess is down the pot!:mad::mad:
Well? find it?

You know, I can't think of anything because I pay attention to what I'm doing and always plan ahead for the what ifs

That's what I was thinking, but thought I would ask before mistakedly drawing a conclusion.

Just like the op dropping the clip off the distributor, I would've either removed it or tape it to the distributor housing, that's planning ahead for the what ifs

I know the pain, small ss flat washer slid off my air cleaner, couldn`t find it anywhere, being ss magnet wouldn`t work, I tore the whole top end off the engine, heads and all. Found it years later in a crotch of the ds header.

If you have headers look in there.:realcrazy:
Exactly the same, luckily I found it after a couple of hours was convinced it had dropped inside the carb.

He`s too embarrassed to tell us he found it in his shirt pocket... allegedly

No, thats what I’d do. Or have it fall off and I pick it up and set it in some stupid place thinking I’ll know EXACTLY where it is.

And then I spend hours looking for it.

I did it yesterday. I have my gearbox apart. I took first gear off the main shaft and left second on there.

I started putting it back together and I'mo telling you I looked for over 45 minutes for that stupid second gear. I looked everywhere. I even got ahold of @MOPARMAGA to ask him if he saw where I set the damn thing because he was here when it came apart.

Finally I said screw it, I'm heading in for lunch and I look at the main shaft and there’s 2 gears on it! First gear is in my hand and the the input is still in the main housing.

I punched out, went to lunch and took the rest of the day off.

That’s a regular deal around this place.

What happened to him was completely avoidable
What should I keep in mind when I rebuild my next car. I don't waant to make any mistakes and you sound like the person that could be very helpful. Please don't leave anything out of your response as I don't want to do something that is completely avoidable.
