we are building a street /strip more door 70 Dart
Gayle wants to race (at track only)

using a 340-4 block date 6-23-70

after cleaning the cosmoline off,
Then sonic checking the cylinders
started chasing/cleaning the bolt holes

OOPS, that isn't a bolt broke off in there is it ?

don;t know how long its been in there, I put the block in storage 16 years ago.
All I do know is it HAS to come out NOW, or the block is junk (coolant leak)

I did think to half fill the block with block crete and run a manual steering box

first, lets see, if I can get it out
got out the drill and bits,
Humm, that looks like a Tap....%^*

dig at it with a pick, someone before me, beat it and smashed the end, it was off center

couldn't get a tap extractor in there either
checked around, no one had a EDM machine, with a deep enough vat, to burn the tap out..

after looking at it for 2 days, finally got the bore scope and looked behind it.
it was jammed into the #1 cylinder
So I couldn't chisel it, to shatter it

after more thoughts and looking..
Man thats a 5/16 tap in a 3/8 hole....
So, I drilled a 1/8 hole between the 4 fluted tap and the block
after that I could move the tap, as it got to the drilled hole, to popped loose
:blob:

Man, was I so happy, cause We had already ordered crank, rods, and pistons, for that deck height.

WE moved on to studding the block
modding the oil and cooling system,
while waiting on the pistons to be made

Gayle is doing the interior
carpet, seats, head-liner, dash and rear package tray
So,we made it a No door for now, easier to work on

Man, glad to here that you were able to finess it out. Would've been a shame to have to let it go. Good work

We know it's a white car
but, this project has sure "Snowballed"
Started out was just going to leave it look like a old four door

once we clean, scrapped the crud, then painted the engine bay,
we had to clean/repair/replace everything as needed...do it once....

First safety feature was to install, a drive shaft safety loop
which meant pull the front seat and carpet, plus the front seat was torn.
also put a temp eng and trans in to know where to put the loop
and measure for a drive shaft,
we (she) had installed a 8 3/4 with 3.55 sg

004-2.jpg

then while installing the eng,
noticed the front end needed a complete re build
already knew the brakes need work cause
it had None

005.jpg

So, as of now
got the front built with spool mount K-frame, poly uppers, and poly strut rod bushings
new upper /lower ball joints,
idler arm and tie rod ends.
gas shocks, on front and rear
new brake shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and all the hoses.
swapped the front from 9" to 10" drums, while it was apart

headliner and rear package tray, rear seat and rear door panels are in

gas tank is history, will have a fuel cell in the trunk

we also removed the vinyl top
painted it with "Hammer tone" black paint

added the rally rims with 245-70-14

looks like we will be painting the rest White, since I have already cut the rear quarter cancer out.

We do need,,, The chrome spears, on BOTH front fenders

I think just about everyone on this site has had their project "snowball" it doesn't take much to get started but oh man the more parts you find the more parts you want.

My swinger started out as a stock /6 rebuild and body work, and now I have coil spring suspension and a big block. haha

Good work getting the tap out of there, that would have got my blood pressure up. :burnout:

Yea, I got to be Real Mellow
when plotting where and how deep to drill for oil
make sure , I hit the Main artery, dead center
to run a 5/16" tube over to the left lifter gallery
for full time oiling to the rockers

001.jpg

I use a .100" bit to drill the passage way, into the rocker fed passage intersecting with the lifter gallery
the drill size also acts as a restrictor to the rockers.
then,go back to the first hole,to plug it with a 1/8"set screw

007.jpg

the easy one to drill are the cam bearings, I drill them with a .125" bit
turn the #2, and #4 bearing , so they no longer attempt to oil the rockers.

I used to drill set screw and put them in the cam passage for restriction of oil,
this way to faster and easier

mods for the mains and the cooling
I learned from Sanborn, back in 02

didn't get much done today
spent most of my time looking for the pipe tap
ended up going to 3 different stores til I found the correct one

Now, that we got a new one, we wiil find the old one

Gayle got the front carpet installed
I got the lifter feed line finished

007-1-1.jpg

finally located all the bolts and brackets/pulleys
haven't ran a small block in many years, only big block

this is the temp engine til the stroker is built
We put this one in, so that she can get used to the car, plus we know
everything fits and works as it should.

pre oiled the engine

gave the radiator a drink from Gayle's 12 volt water tank (for the flowers)

a short vid of running

need to re install the heater box and master cylinder, a few other small things
then a stop to the muffler shop

Then to the track to get a base line
mild 340 vs 340 stroker
