So often I have non car people ask me what the meaning is of these terms I use. I am probably preaching to the choir on here because I am sure all you cats already know this.

O.E. = Original equipment. Refers to the parts that typically come off the car that were set in place by the factory. Often referred to as "stock" parts.

Stock = as a side note I will also clarify "stock" which refers to factory parts that your local dealer would have in "stock" around the time the car was new.

O.E.M. = Original Equipment Manufacture. This one is a bit twisty. Contrary to popular belief many parts that were original on your mopar were not made by Chrysler corp., but rather purchased by Chrysler corp. from an independent manufacture for mass use on production vehicles. Hurst, Champion, Firestone and so many more are O.E.M. (original equipment manufacture) You can go to the local parts house right now and pick up a set a of champion spark plugs for your ride. They are actually O.E.M. parts because they were made by a manufacture who has at one time provided parts to Chrysler Corp. under mass contract.

So often the two terms O.E. and O.E.M. are used in the wrong context :soapbox:

This was interesting to discover when I was searching for an under dash wiring harness. There wasn't one giant supplier of the harnesses, but infact a handful of smaller suppliers.

I must admit that I've never thought of those terms so specifically. 'Pretty much' to me, if it had a X brand name and part number, and was therefore "blessed" by company "X" then it was OE /OEM. I'd agree this is an interesting point.

Having sold auto parts for some nearly 17 years, I CAN tell you that people used to take their cars to dealers for repair work, and that quite often, they left the dealer with independent auto parts brands for parts!!! This was true, here, locally, of any and all local dealers

What about N.O.S. vs. NOS???

some people don't realize what either of these mean. Just recently someone posted a 69 dart front end N.O.S parts (or so it says) for $600. for the whole front end. First giveaway is a single N.O.S. fender would be worth $600.. Needless to say it turned out to be used parts and proof that some people don't know what these terms mean.

N.O.S. = NEW OLD STOCK further = parts that are still new and have never been used even after 40+ years of sitting on a shelf somewhere.

NOS = what you use when you don't want your engine to last very long.

How bout but VS butt? Fart VS breaking wind?

I swear. Some folks just think of stuff to think of.

I'm in the military.

You don't even know the acronym pain I've seen.

ha! all this talk makes me think of the "ultimate resto" guy. where he has one of those really rare, desirable models.. , and wants it restored by THE shop to perfect, as it left the factory condition. cost is NOT a factor.....every nut and bolt perfect! , and it WILL win the ultimate award ( maybe, maybe not!),,,at the biggest, baddest mopar show out there.
yes, the factory stamped out sheetmetal , cast engine blocks etc etc... but nuts, bolts, wiring harnesses? power steering boxes, carbs, and huge list of small parts were simply supplied by the co. making these parts. NOT ma mopar. the car was the sum of parts, not by any means all made by mopar! and if the supply of something was getting low and if the "usual" vendor was not going to have those parts there on that assembly line, mopar went to someone else! so "correct" was not always correct! ha
we all find our find our fun where we find it, and for sum people this ultimate resto game is their bag. o k we me. glad i'm not one! can't afford such anyway! ha

OE & OEM are the same to me. There is a difference in the terms depending on the part. Like when dealing with a 6 pack intake carb set up.
