does anyone care what part of the filter the metal shavings accumulate?
and if you have THAT MUCH metal in your oil, a magnet wont save your engine anyway

Yes but if the engine is shedding shavings or chunks, it helps to have a place to look for them. Even better when you look and there aren't any.
