Hi,

The oil pan is going back on today or tomorrow after real seal replacement. I have read the sealing oil pan instructions and am ready to tackle that in the right way. The engine is on a stand and I will put the pan back on with the engine inverted. I have a number of oil pan bolts in a can. I have 18 long and 5 short and don't know which ones go where?

Thanks.

Sounds like you have "bolts", technically termed "machine screws", not "nuts". I forgot, but the special ones are likely around the front and rear crankshaft exits. Be real careful torquing the rear ones since those go into aluminum holes which are easy to strip. Indeed, I would test-fit each bolt first to insure the hole is good and they don't "bottom out". Blow out all the holes w/ air. There is a good writeup by Dutra on www.slantsix.org on installing the rear seal and pan. Someone linked to it just yesterday in a seal question.

The longer ones go into the timing cover (the front of the engine) the others should be the same length.
