I think the issue becomes connecting to the boss. The boss has to be pretty heavily ground to clear the rotating assembly. Just thinking out loud and not looking a a block... But I'd think about plugging the oem pickup passage fully, spot facing a new boss that is against the oil pan rail, and re-drill/thread it there.
