Oil pump drive ???

Has anyone ever encountered an oil pump drive that would not go in?

And then it was wedged in so tight you can’t get it out?

If so, what was the fix?

I have a brand new drive. I have no idea when I got it or where. It’s a nice piece with the pinned gear.

I drop it in the other day and it just sounded weird. So I looked down in there and it’s about half way into the cam gear.

I grab my long screw driver and try and turn it so it drops in. It won’t move. Either way.

So I grab my trusty wire hoop I made to get under it and pull it out. That didn’t work.

I was going to pull the tunnel ram off and pry it out and then I decided that was stupid because whatever is jacked up can’t be fixed sitting on the dyno. So I take that steaming pile of whale turd back off the pump.

I get the pan off (royal PITA) and I loosen the pump. It won’t fall out. So I take the bolts out and wiggle the pump. Still stuck. So I lift the pump up about .125 and the drive falls out.

WTF?

So I put the drive in the lathe and get a dial indicator on it.

It’s bent .034! My chuck has .002 run out and it measured .036. I call that junk.

I have an ok used one on the shelf. I ckeck that junker. It’s .023 out. Straight garbage.

I decided to get it back as straight as I can. I worked it for a bit and got it down to .005 runout.

The pump is back on and the drive will unscrew right up out of there like normal.

I guess from now on I will check every drive before installation.

Yup. It’s costing me two days to get it back off the dyno, on the stand, unscrewed and now I have to get the pan sealed back up (royal PITA) so I can get it back on the pump so I can install the distributor and see if this way over budget garbage will even start.

If I was paying myself for this job I’d be broke.

Well thankfully, it's somebody else's money. lol

Until recently, Camshaft install/ fit usually went well. BENT ****, fresh out of the box, has now become a ' Must check' procedure. Oil drive shafts are probably the next thing 'WE' can't ASSume are good-to-go out of the box.
 
Yes. I’m still stumped as to how it got bent.

It’s been in the top of one of my tool boxes for at least 10 years. And it was brand new.
You probably put yours in someone's engine and you put the junk up in your box.
I can see that happening 100%

I wonder if it warped during the heat treatment. Now I have more crap to check. Glad you posted this. Thanks.

Very well could have been warped from heat treat but it should have been ground to size after that.

Which I thought might be an issue. I thought it was possible that it was oversized but I mic’d it and one other drive I have and there were within a tenth or so.

I have a couple of oem units if your down and out. Sure you want that in your power-plant?

Side bar: What cfm carbs are you testing with?

Always a possibility.

I still can’t find my water pump lol. I kicked Nala around hoping she would confess to taking into the field and burying it but she didn’t break. So I can’t blame her.
 
I can think of a 1000 ways it would have got bent in my shop in the heat of the moment, it would be hard to remember after 10 years in the top of the tool box.
