I need to provide a new oil pump driveshaft to my builder because the old one is all scored up. Putting together a 340 with lighter pistons and rods, HV oil pump, etc. Will be spinning it up to 6500 or so and want to use a good part. Not a lot of readily available selection out there at the moment and I need it quickly so the build can proceed. Is the Mancini MRE212153 a good part? Says it it hardened shaft and OK for HV pump. I've heard good things about Mancini but nothing in particular about this part. I think the only other one I've found ready to ship is Milodon and that carries a premium price. I'd get the Hughes Melonized one before dropping that much on a Milodon standard shaft. Any other manufacturers or suppliers I should look at? Been on Summit, Mancini, Jegs (yuck!), and Hughes so far.

I would get the hardened shaft, I have seen the stock shafts round off the hex and loose oil pressure. I have used the Mopar Performance and the Milidon , but have no experience with the Mancini. Not a part that i would go cheap with.

Unfortunately the least expensive, and out of stock everywhere I've looked but I'll keep looking today. They all have Milodon in stock, but at nearly three times the price of the Melling with no apparent benefit I can see why.
Check with your local parts stores. They may have a few in a warehouse somewhere. They can check inventory.

This one is what you want, it is stronger than the stock one...

How to Rebuild a Small Block Part 16: Installing the Distributor Gear, Oil Pump, and Windage Tray

The Melling IS-72 appears to be a nice part with the standard gear and the hardened and radiused tip. It also comes with the bronze bushing. Pictures vary online but this is what comes in the box as of November 2024.

AutoZone is showing the Melling IS72 in stock for shipping at $53.99.

O'Reilly's is showing one in stock for $60 at a store I'll be near this Thursday. Send me a PM if you want me to get it and ship it to you.

For some reason Summit Racing is showing that part number "Not Available" and it has been that way for a while. I saw they were in stock in November at O'Reilly so I ordered some. I plan on changing the regular gear for a melonized Crane gear I have had sitting around for a while to run with a billet core hydraulic roller camshaft.

My son brought me the Melling 72 home back in November .
Just like the pic from Bobzilla in post #11.

He is the manager at Oreillys,,,,,ordered it,,,had it the next day .
Excellent quality,,,,,fantastic price,,,,he gets a discount .

Thanks but I saw the one at Auto Zone yesterday and it should be here tomorrow. If it looks good I’ll send it on, otherwise I’ll get the Mancini.

I hope I’m not jumping in here too late… but I’m looking to replace/upgrade the oil pump driveshaft in our 273 refresh… upgrading to a hardened one has been heavily suggested to me over our stock used one… I was unaware of the melling until I saw your discussion…

to a novice like myself… is there any major pro or con of the melling72 vs the Mancini? Price aside that is…

I’m also planning on going with a new melling m72 oil pump, pickup tube72s2, and the hi pressure spring… this is more or less a refresh of our 273 and considering some of the crucial parts… any feedback on the Mancini vs the melling to help educate our decision would be greatly appreciated… (if the melling is of decent quality for regular everyday driving it would surely save me some coin, free shipping and a discount code as well, and is available at oreilys around the corner, over the Mancini)

thanks, guys!

I got the Melling IS-72 in and sent it to my builder. The tip is heat treated but the gear is not pinned. I questioned my builder about this and his opinion is that for my relatively mild build, it wouldn’t pose a problem. To be clear, my stock stroke 340 build should end up at 450-475hp and will pull to 7000rpm. He’s good with it and so am I. The Mancini is fine too and if it makes you feel better, have at it.

Very much appreciated for the feedback… this is a mild overhaul/refresh of an already previously rebuilt 273… some upgrades from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel, 340 springs and a custom cam… although I don’t know for sure I don’t think it’ll be anywhere near the beast of the 450-475hp that your 340 will be… just wondered if the melling setup would be a healthy improvement enough over stock… thanks for the feedback!

I would check the gear teeth for wear and the hex end for a possible start of twisting. If none is present, I would use the stock one on your mostly stock 273. I would be more concern with the bushing in the block. Your 273 may have a lot of miles on it. Check for a wobble. replace if needed.
