My son got a GREAT 1970 440/4. We got it all apart and found that

everything is in perfect condition inside it. Just a small cleaning and re-ring

it. Of course everything wil be new going back into it. Question is, he likes a

big cam. The comperssion will still be 9.5 or 9.7 as stock with 906 heads. He

was loking at the cam size of 500/302...or 509/282...not sure about the last

number "282". But he wants a lumpy cam. How big can he go with stock

everything...of course with dual springs too. The pistons are stock 1970 flat

tops..no valve releifs. What ya think? Will it work without smacking into

eachother? I really cant get over how clean and nice everything was inside

that engine...original 46K miles..no ridge at all. Hone it and go.

Jeff

Wish me luck, sure NEEDING to go back to Iraq for a few more years...SOON.

The guys I work with will always be there..not the Army. :clock:

Check out one of Comp cams new "Thumper" cams. They're designed for modern driveability, yet have plenty of overlap for tht "Rumpity-rump" idle we all love.

The biggest I used has been the MP .528 solid (not really that big...) and the Crane H302-2 hydraulic, which is a split pattern cam that runs .518 [email protected], 308° advertised int/.528 [email protected], 318° advertised exh or something like that. You come close to the pistons, but that will have a noticable idle and pull very well. Also, have the ehads totally redone... They will need the spring seats cut and the guides trimmed in addition to a valve job.

Jeff, do you remember what your piston to deck measurement was at TDC before you pulled the engine down. If you're zero deck or lower the .509" cam will work with the flat top pistons but you'll be close to the valves. I'd still mock it up using a .045" head gasket to be sure. Also what moper said about getting the heads done with at least a pocket port job otherwise that much cam is waisted.
