MOPAR GUY 70
New Member
My first car when I enlisted in the Air Force in '77 at my first assignment was a '70 Plymouth Roadrunner with a 383HP/ Air grabber/ A727B Trans/ 323 Hotchkiss.
As a young Airman with no money I ate a "CUP of Noodles" to afford to build my car.
I built my engine in my dorm room and hid in my closet during inspection every Friday.
Under the Direct Connection Catalog 12-11 second bracket racer I built my car from this catalog. I still have this catalog today!
When I built my Runner I had a 284/484 Purple Shaft Cam, 11:1 pistons, A modified 727 trans, with B&M shift kit/Valve body. Fairbanks 11' Slingshot Torque Converter 4,500 stall. Line lock. Dana 4/10 rear. Traction bars. Hedman headers through 2.5 piping to WALKER "RED LINE Z" mufflers. IT SOUNDED F-ing AWESOME - MEAN!!!
Under torque off the line I would bust the drivers side motor mount. Went through many "higher durometer" motor mounts after tearing them all up under load. My dorm mate said... "let's use a chain and turn buckle to fasten this down!" I did just that and no more tearing up the drivers side motor mount! It hooked up even harder!
It ran like a raped ape! I ran against many cars that were supposedly faster, bigger displacement.
One thing I do know, my Runner hooked up off the line and always gave whomever a run for their money!
That car, never let me down.
At my first assignment my dorm mate had a '70 Plymouth Barracuda 440-Six pack 4 speed we had built together after we did my Runner. He decided to separate after his 4 yrs.
Offered me to buy his car after we built it up... his offer was $1,500. This was back in the late '70's. I had no money after building up my Runner so I turned him down. UGH!!!
Attached is my ride that was mine at one time!
Miss the car, the sound it made at idle that everyone commented on all the time (What ya go in that? Sounds really mean!)
That 383 out ran many cars of bigger displacement in its day. I don't know what to tell ya... other than I had one hell of a combination that worked right and delivered!!
I was one lucky son of a gun!
The plate frame that was around my RUNNR plate back in the '70's was... "GET IT ON!"
I recently went back to MOPAR and got my first truck. A RAM 1500 Southfork Edition, fully loaded.
My wife and had done moving while in Arizona and used several rental trucks. The one that impressed me the most was the plain RAM.
So I bought one that's a SOUTH FORK fully loaded.
Before I entered the service in '77 I was a detailer. After I retired from the AF I ran a detail shop professionally for M-Benz for three years. I did the clear 3M protection and full detailing. I installed the 3M package on my new RAM. LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!! The special leather interior is to die for!!!!!!!!!!!!
CURRENTLY:
I'd like to find an "A Body" Duster/Demon" ... Auto trans with a Big block or be able to insert one! WHITE body is best!
