On paper it should be scary fast. On the road, not so much

Sorry, alot of these questions are flying right over my head. I'm not a mechanic, but a always do what I know how to do, and often attempt what I shouldnt. I always want to learn more about what makes my car tick, but tracking down the correct info isnt always easy. But that's why I'm here.

If you don't understand a question just ask for some help or clarification... this is how we learn things. We all didn't know anything at some point. I learn by asking questions also which makes me feel stupid at the time but that's life in general.. (for me)

Just curious what is your exhaust? your issues sound just like mine and i chased it for months (and spent a lot of money) for it to end up being the mufflers i put on.. which i would have never considered til a guy at Transgo mentioned it. I replaced them and it was night and day (i had put on big summit mufflers to quiet mine down and it just killed it, (zero power.. slow reving)

P.S. the mufflers that screwed me sounded fine and i had exhaust coming out.. but just killed the motor, never cut them open to see why.. straight in the dumpster.

is there anyone in the Sacramento area that could possibly help this guy out and see what he actually has and what may be going on?

There's lots of GREAT fellers in southern Cali, but I don't know of anyone up that way. Maybe he can throw some dough at somebody?

They must of been super restrictive, so once you fixed that the 318 worked OK for a TF headed 318 ?

yeah, it spins up super fast and boogies now... It was so bad that i even pulled the motor apart to double check cam timing.. and that's with 4.30 gears.. i had a video of it.. can't find it though

Found it.. not sure if it will play from there.. just to get an idea, and this wasn't timing or anything else.. even changed the dist to make sure...

P.S. this was like 3/4 throttle and it was just blah....

I am only posting this cause it is something the OP can check in 20 minutes and might save a ton of headaches

This was with 4.30s and a 3200 converter..

I’ve never heard of “performance”mufflers totally killing a combination. I kept waiting for that motor to turn on and start pulling, which it never did. Do you have a video of it running now with the changed out mufflers?

I’ve had it happen twice, two different cars. They were not new mufflers, but not very old, less than 5 years. Looked fine from the outside. Something failed internally.

Both Dynamax Super Turbos, No. 17747 and No. 17733. The cars were low 13, high 12 second street cars.

Both times the car dropped 0.3 seconds, and 3 mph from one track session to the next. Replaced the mufflers, et and mph back to normal. Both cars had H-pipes. Can’t imagine the performance drop off if I didn’t have the H-pipes.

I always wonder how many guys are running around with this same problem and never know it.

I don't... i haven't pulled it out this year yet but will soon and see if i can make a vid.. I need to rig up a phone/camera holder.. As you can hear in the video it won't pull at all.. and felt like the brakes were dragging it down

Are you sure it's not an issue with the transmission? Like, valves or rear servo sticking or cross-leaking somewhere, or the reverse band too tight? Maybe you should start a thread in the transmissions section. (ps...I haven't read all your posts about the issue, just spitballing)
