I have a 904 that I want to put behind my 340. I have built the engine to live happily around the 7000rpm mark & will be pushing out around 470hp at the flywheel. The engine & box are going into a 65 AP6 Australian valiant, I`m using a 904 instead of a 727 because the 727 is to big for the transmission tunnel & I don't want to cut the floor up.
A guy in our car club over here is selling a race prepped 904 and said it was only good for 6000rpm?? I asked him what he meant by that & this is what he said:

Well. where do i start... here is my research ---
1 it all comes down the year of the box it was made. [ this is the correct and best year 71 as i found out]
2 you need minim .. here is a copy of the email: my hp was limited to 500rwh and 7500 rpm.[ mine can go now 8000rpm with the glide] I was limited the the gear box..

I have received your tech sheet and reviewed the information. Your transmission fortunately is a 1971 model so it does have the good size intermediate servo bore and the correct pump for the Billet Aluminum drum. Provided your transmission has the steel planetary carriers, they should have the capacity to take the power. You should also disassemble the pump to be sure that the both halves of it are true and flat to prevent any loss of pressure or cross flows, when the 2 halves are bolted together and that there is no wear from the pump gears on either side.

The rest is a matter of correctly installing these components.

and the only place to buy a proper valve body that works with a transbrake at 8000rpm is SRM. $600. unique and special and allows complete oil flow in all selections and only can lock in 1st gear hydraulically.

All this + + blanket ..$3500. + freight $449 and the list goes on.

Now.. Brad has all this and more and the 904 failed last week running a 9sec pass and the box locked up on the finish line. !!!

Im disappointed not run with the 904, Mark and Ash has put a lot of effort in this.
So now I have a better set up built by Andrew Sanders, after talking to him I need to be safe.
That is number 1 !
It has to be reliable 2!
Im not looking for single numbers in this set up [ i have to go for a full drag car andra approved stuff] certainly can do it with the right car. [ you could say its a spare for Andrew when he is up here racing]
My boost will be 1/3 and crank it up for skids and dyno shoot outs .
So there the deal. . It can be built, !
but in the end at hi revs things change and a lot of $$ down the drain and **** flies sideways at 130mph+ with the back wheels locked up at the finish line.
I hope this helps.
I done phone calls to the Us and chat to Maxwell and Grants auto's. All my mates who been racing 10sec and under street driven run glides except 1 that runs C4.. ., Thats the other option but I can't bring my self to be that low.

. I do have 1x 6cyl std power glide spare for sale [ bell housing removable ] and they have low 1st gear.. you just have to put some love into it and off the shelf parts.
Its not the Hp but the Revs. ..my box for sale 500hp and max 6000rpm and thats being truthful.

Any thought's on this??

Yeah, that's total BS.

These 904's are so simple to build it's stupid. I realize you are in Aus/NZ region, but, even shipping a bunch of parts that will work won't cost you $3500 + shipping. No way no how.

There are a bunch of threads here on rebuilding TF's. Some have extensive parts list and there are more than a few throwing 575+ hp at them at 7000+ rpm. Nothing exotic in any of them unless you feel a transbrake or manual valve body are exotic.

They charge you like a wounded bull for parts over here in Australia, When I buy the parts I need for the 904 it will be straight out of the US. Is that right about the 1971 904 being the best box to use??
I couldn't understand why he said the box was only good for 6000rpm?? I've never herd of such a thing, The reason I posted this up was to see if anyone ells had heard of it, A mate of his is running pretty much the same 904, The other night on the race track the 904 let go & locked up just before the finish line on a 9sec pass, I think he`s a bit sceptical about running the 904 after seeing that happen and he`s opted for a 2spd power glide. I haven't had much experience with autos just 4sp manuals.

the lock up is usually the stock first/reverse serve getting cocked in it's bore. doesn't happen all the much but an after market billet one with double seals should keep this from happening.
