Parting out these old cars.

-
OK , this thread was intended to talk parting out cars and what not.
Not an atta boy thread.

Lately I've bought 2 different parts hoards that I know is a bust. ,won't even break even. But thats my fault, as If I drive 2 hours to pick I want to drag something home.

Lol,,,,Al,,you deserve every kind word,,,,you’ve earned it !
And besides,,,,you can’t always pick out the diamonds,,,,you are always going to have some losses .

I used to part cars from 'A' bodies to land yacht Chryslers.....started in the mid 70's and wish I had the room to save some of them because some were really solid. It was also surprising to see some that were 5 years old and half rusted away and I don't live in the rust belt. It was good exercise too lol.

There was a guy ( probably still there) in MO west of St Louis had a giant mopar salvage/ collection yard. Seems like his name may have been Clay Kusuth or something like that. I'm sure I miss speld it
. Maybe someone has heard of him. Big time racer @ Gateway back in the day.

Met Clay and his wife at the Baytown drag strip when they were down for a NSS race. Great people imo. There was a guy about 20 miles north of me that also had a huge yard but he was shady doing business with ya. What you had was junk until it was in his yard.....

ya , there's a couple mopar parts sellers/ collector local to me. TOP $$$$$ for rusty rotted junk and won't even deal .

You're a better man than me. Just finished 3 days ripping a Demon apart. I had a guy that wanted, wanted, and wanted.......But when I finished, he changed his mind. I am getting tired of tripping over this parts hoard. I am near the finish line with my car......Once that is done, these parts are heading down the road. The last truck & trailer load of Swinger parts went for a case of beer........LOL, the guy was so happy that he brought me 2 cases!

I wish you were closer Al......I'd drop everything off at your house. Keep up the good work.

Ya, Troy I'm kinda down here at the end of the line. Hard to find good stuff close by.

Clay and Rosie still there. At about 1k units now. Good friends of mine. I you go to the ICH swap meet and go into the 2nd room, as you enter the hall way, they will be on your left. They even have a yard guy. I have never met Al, that I know of, unless I did when I teched at Gateway, but thanks for doing what you do.

I was going to tag you, I thought you may know him. Is his place in Catawissa ? Do you still work at the track ?

I had forgotten her name....such a hard name to remember lol. Several of the guys that used to run NSS regularly are not with us anymore.... :( One of them that used to work/co-owned Texas Outsiders (Mark Artis) is one along with his business partner (Dan Bell) that owned the lonely Ford (were there other Fords?) that Mark drove. Another is Dave Schultz that recently passed on. Was trying to get into NSS myself years ago but life got in the way. Had collected a lot of good parts including a Jerico 4 speed. Damon Kuhn got me into those things after going for a 'ride' in Fugly. Another guy that could roll a stick.

I would always race at the Monster Mopar Weekend at Gateway. NSS was always there. Loved watching those guys !

I wanted to race NSS pretty bad....the rules at the time wasn't in much favor for a 66 Belvedere but were much better for a 67 so I started collecting parts to make mine look like a 67. Oh well. Kinda strange that my last race was with that 66 with the /6 in it. More strange was the ET that it ran was 19.66! Went 7 rounds for the win one night which was my last competition race. There wasn't enough cars to have 3 brackets so they just ran 1 bracket.

I had the slowest car out there and ended up beating the fastest. I cut a really good light and ran the number and he cut a really bad light and broke out! Kinda funny because he worked at the refinery I did but in a different area. He was a Chevy guy and nearly all his co-workers were Mopar and they gave him hell....all of them knew me. That's odd in itself since Houston is NOT a Mopar town. Big John was what everyone called him but he's gone now too. His car was a 62 Chevy II with a 350 and a small blower (4-71?) and ran low 11's. He dialed in 11.49 that night. That's a long wait against a 19.66 car....and of course, I staged last! :D

I reply to quite a few Facebook adds, Most of the people selling have no idea what they are selling , Makes me wonder where they came up with the price they're asking . Half the people wont even reply back !

Parts are parts. They are not platinum, let alone bronze. A good drivetrain is the only thing that you can hope for, aside from saveable “one year only……” blah blah blah. Parting is a hobby of love.

I buy parts cars for MY parts! Anybody doing it to help you is a great person.

I've had pretty good results selling on FB marketplace.....usually post stuff that's too big to ship. And lots of stuff I've sold there came off from the side of the road! It's unreal what people throw away.

Lmao, thanks Al, it would be an honor to meet you and T. Unfortunately the Top 10 is closer to the truth than you know. I appreciate what you AND ESPECIALLY T do. Ima thinking about lot of the credit goes to T. If she wasn't game for it, we know "this" wouldn't be happening. So make sure to let her know how thankful we are here.
I still remember the parts that went to Germany and back lol.
Awesome people, we need more like you.
I would love to meet Steve @4spdragtop ,
But I think he's on American top 10 most wanted and can't come across the Border ! :poke:

Scrap yards around me don't pay anything for steel unless >1000 lb, but will take it off your hands. I parted a 1983 M-B 300D I got free on cl, "just tow it away". Apparently abandoned at a paint shop since new popular grey-blue paint. I needed a fender and hood to repair crash damage in mine, but also swapped the other fender, sunroof and trunk lid, so only had to paint half my car (paint shop matched perfectly). The engine, doors, glass, and interior were gone, so the body had little value and no room to store it, so stripped all parts and hauled the body shell to a scrap yard, filled with other junk steel. Paid $45, which almost paid for the U-haul trailer rental.

I see by my receipt that I got $40 for 2 radiators and $65 for the car .

Well I'm really not in to scrapping but when I need to dump the carcass its nice to get a little $$$$ for it. Luckily the scrap yard is only about 3 miles away

Have one that's about 3 miles too but they pay a bit less and don't take complete cars. Last time in was mostly junk parts like a drained torgue converter etc. I'm sure they will take fenders and such but haven't had anything like that in a few years now.

Thanks for posting the current scrap price @RAT ROD AL !

The last time I took it I was happy to get $6 per 100# because it had been $3-4 for a while.
When I started saving scarp, about 10 years ago, it was $12!!

Most places won't take a whole car if you don't have a title.
Some won't even take a bunch of cut up stuff if it's the same color.

I've got three scrap places about 5 miles down the road from me.
They used to post prices on signboards daily.
Haven't done that for years.

ALWAYS separate radiators, condensers/evaporators, electric motors and batteries.
Those pay WAY more than steel or tin.
Sometimes a whole car will pay a tad more than loose steel.
Don't know why as it's got a load of plastic, glass, and cloth in it.

I've probably got a 5x8 trailers worth, but I ain't goin for three bucks a hundred.
