Just a little story about how one of my kids got a lesson in it.

We were out camping and dirt bike riding for a 3 day weekend and the youngest comes walking back from his first ride on the first day.
I asked "Where's the bike" and he said the chain broke so he walked back to get some help bringing it in.
So we walk down to where the bike is and I check it out, to find out the chain isn't broken but the master link is gone.
I usually keep things like that in the bike box, but for whatever reason there isn't one for that size chain in there.

Well after a discussion about how Dad just F'd up and didn't make sure we had something as critical as a spare master link I tell him that I did bring something that could save him.
So I start walking back the direction he came from on the trail.
The trail was actually a small wash about 20 feet wide and nothing but sand.

He followed along , but asked me where I was going and I said I was going to find the master link.
You would have thought he saw a ghost or something, as he stopped in his tracks with his mouth hanging open in shock.
He say's "Yea, right, what are the chances of finding the master link in all this sand?"
I asked "Well, what choice do we have?"
"Oh it gets worse" I added, because a master link is 3 pieces and I looked up to see shock and horror go through him.

We walked along for a little bit and lo and behold there's the main part of the link.
One down and two to go. (the two smaller pieces)
After about 30 min of walking up and down this wash I found the other two pieces.
As we were walking back to camp he say's "I can't believe you found those".
I said "forty five minutes of patience just saved your entire 3 day riding trip"

He continued walking along for a minute looking at the ground, and then he looked up with tears in his eyes and quietly says "Thanks Dad. You kick ***" and gave me a big ole hug.

After all the crap we go through as parents times like this make it all worth it.
