Hello all,

My heads are off getting fixed, but my mechanic says that it is convenient to replace piston rings, but there are no grooves or scratches on the walls, his argument is that he can spin the engine pushing the fan, which I think is logical since there are no heads to create compression.

Any tips to make this decision, money is tight.

If money's tight and it doesn't show any damage, it's not worth it. Why are the heads off? How much of the original honing pattern can you see? Is there a ridge at the top of the bores?

Not sure about how old is the engine.

There is no ridge. all the bores are smooth. Heads are off because gaskets were bad, so I´m replacing valve seals and have them a little milled.

the fact that you can turn the engine pushing the fan does tell you something? I prefer to spend the extra money now that heads are off, if the mechanic is right I will have to disassamble the engine again.
