I was digging around in a box of parts and ran across this cam. I'm having a bout of CRS (Can't Remember Stuff [sic]) and need help identifying what I've got. Please take a look and let me know. Thanks.

Looks to be a mopar cam, the green dot and the numbers etching

Fair enough. In another thread about another cam, someone mentioned a color chart for these paint daubs. Do you have or know of such a chart or where I might look for one?

Measure the lobe. Width and height, get a lift determined.
.490 was the smallest MP solid they sold outside a stock 273 cam, so of its sub .490.. its hyd.
Good chance its a .455 lift hyd

Well, I learned something today. Thank you. It sure would be nice if Zippy broke out the paint daub info he has - even if it isn't reliable. I'd just like to see it for grins & giggles.
like you, i'd love to see the info just to see it.

but it makes sense, MP had at least three (that i know of) subs grinding their cams so it would track that somebody was like: we need a way to ID these bad boys and came up with this "system" that was probably only somewhat followed.

my *guess* is that a lot of the numbers we see on them are the cam companies, then they grind whatever MP cam and stamp another number onto it, then MP gets it and throws some paint on and bingo-bango here we are 40 years later.

That 242563 has a definite Crane or Cam Dynamics ring to it.

so i wasn't there... at least not in this corporeal form, that is... but my thinking as to how it went down was something like this:

MP calls up crane and says we wants a bunch of cams, here be our numbers. crane says: okie-dokies, one min plz. and then they go and pull their cores that are *close* to the numbers MP wants and then just give them a pass thru the grinder to make 'em so. then maybe they give them a stamp to id them, maybe it's the RO number or whatever Jimmy two nuts feels like is the number to stamp that day or the only part of the phone number he can remember from that blonde down at the belly up bar last week and they get shipped back to MP for repackaging.

then back at MP jimmy two nuts cousin who just loves his joe job is unpacking the cams and matching up things and stuffs while throwing down paint daubs and runs out of green. so instead of bugging his buzz cut manager who's already riding his *** for being a dirt ball slacker that smells like the reefer he just figures: i'll put three white dots instead of two green and i'll totally remember and write this down when i'm done with this set of them.

and the rest they say, is history.

You're mentally ill.

I wasn't trying to tie Crane together with MP. I'm unsure Crane ever made cams for them. I was just saying it looked a LOT like a Crane or Cam Dynamics number. Those two companies walked in lockstep for a bit.

i didn't think you were. but it would follow that crane & cam dynamics were quite similar in that RHS poached somebody from crane and started cam dynamics in the early 70's.

i'm unsure if crane or dynamics ever ground for MP(DC at the time!) but it's generally accepted that CMC and general kinetics were major players in the mix.
