I have a freshly rebuilt Mopar automatic transmission that I've been trying to id without success. The #s are 8953001836 and 8905 and 5334. There are also some faint numbers that could be 85. There are 3 inch tall raised numbers (by welding?) on the bellhousing: 577-1 . I've been told that the tranny had been rebuilt for racing. Could the 577-1 numbers have been done by the tranny shop?

I bet $1 dollar its a 727 from a Jeep Wagoneer that ran the AMC 360. The 999 was behind the 242 sixes.

Good luck.

the 999 lock-up also came behind the 360 in 76-77? and up. it is still 31" long

Sorry for the lack of pictures. I thought all that was needed was the tranny id. It apprears to be a 727 based on the oil pan. The bellhousing is 16 inches across and the tranny is about 35 inches long. Thanks

Thanks for everyones help. One more thing ... The guy that I got it from said it had been rebuilt for racing. Would that mean basically a shifting kit or could they do serious mods to the tranny? And what about the 577-1 number. Any ideas?
