Ref 68 gts: When I removed the leaky input shaft seal I damaged the housing that holds the first bearing. First question: if I removed the slotted cyl but that holds the housing in place, will this allow me to remove just the housing head without the whole assy coming out or will springs, washers, others bearings any rings, etc, dislodge? Second question: if I can just remove the housing head with the first bearing in place, does anyone have a housing head? I can send a pic of it. Added bonus: I'm trying to do this in the vehicle. Thank in advance, steve

Update: I was able to remove the damaged housing head while on the vehicle. Does anyone have one? It holds the input shaft bearing and oil seal. See attached pic. Thanks in advance, Steve

If you don't find one you may want to contact a company that rebuilds power steering boxes like
Steer and Gear, perhaps they would have one off a core.

I too, need to replace the [leaking] input shaft seal. I have the retaining ring out but stopped there. The replacement kit for just the seal seems to want to include what is probably an outer dust shield (closest to the steering coupler).
I addition, there is a small "O" ring which I'm guessing goes on the Input shaft and rather large one (~3.5") that would go on the [Aluminum] housing retained by the large Retaining RING (and Washer).
Is there anything holding this housing in place other than the friction of the "O" rings AND can I fashion up a clamp to grab onto the center hub of the housing to pull the housing straight out. See photo.
1- where to clamp
2- pull direction
Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

update: I was able to get the head off the input shaft.
With the lock ring and accompanying washer removed, I rummaged and found a piece of tubing, ~ 16-14 gage that was just short enough of the [hubs] diameter to prevent putting it on.
Cut the tube along the length which allowed it to expand and fit over the hub.
Then clamped on the tube with a huge channel locks.
Tapped with brass and then switch to a rubber mallet and HEAD.
Looks like the tiny "O" ring that will come with the kit fits of the nipple feature of what I believe is the piston and it indexes into the HEAD so it will only go back together correctly. NEXT, order a kit. Hope this helps some one else who has to do the same thing. 1) the tube, ~1-1/4 to 1- 1/2" long; 2) slot in the tube
