Is that not a gasket kit ? Includes a few gaskets and a shaft seal ? And yes we do pay more for some parts but not all parts. Price shop your OEM starter reman'd versus a later model reman'd Bosch starter ( 96 Camry for example ).

Yup. It's how she goes up here. That and good luck getting parts next day like most of the states does. Down there you order something, it's in next day. Up here? 2+ days usually. That's what happens with 35 million people spread out over 9.985 million km².

I have never dealt with bumper to bumper but I deal with two local chains and have taken the time to go in and get to know a couple of the guys at each shop . Building a personal relationship with a good parts guy is invaluable . The main shop I deal with JB Auto now has a FABO member working behind the counter and even before he moved there from another outfit I had already built a working relationship with one of his co-workers that gets me a real good discount , better than some of the shop wholesale accounts they have . Get to know someone at your local store , go in introduce yourself ,take em some donuts on the holidays when they are working and your not -you know be a Canadian it will pay you back in spades .

I didn't realize you have it so tough up there, I've spent all 36 years of my life in or around Nebraska, we can get anything cheap and fast here.

What is shipping like on gaskets and other small stuff? If it makes it significantly cheaper no doubt some of your American buddies on here would help, I know I'd be willing to pick stuff up and ship it for you guys occasionally.

I just bought the same Felpro kit local. $35 was my cost. A bit of a "discount".
NAPA I avoid at all costs due to pricing.

The good ole days are gone for sure , stores have consolidated and being on an island is the same as being in the boonies , all our stuff comes over from the mainland at some point but by being a regular I have been able to get account pricing and by being on the "Good Guy" list I get the better account pricing , get to know someone there a little better and then ask him to put you in the computer under an assumed account name , I'm Dodge Guy at one shop and I've never owned a dodge lol but the code 3000 discount is great and sometimes they just make up a price and enter it into the system .This is after all still an Good Ole Boy hobby .

Yep the odds are for most of us that we have more than one car that we work on. With the kids the bride and my cars, Im at parts store quite often. Too often really lol. So I get shop prices, but I still get quotes to keep them legit.

Yeah the running joke at JB is I should take the $10hr drivet job because I could offset the 20buck paycut with employee pricing on all the parts I buy in a year .

I've thought about it lol. I generally take a second job over the winter that's dedicated to car bits.

If you live near the border then have it shipped to a business just on the US side. Most places within continental US offer free shipping over a certain $ value. Then when it arrives you zip across the border to pick it up. But if you're on the Island or up north then that's not really an option which means shipping is going to cost a bomb. Only 35 million peeps scattered across a large area means shipping stuff is going to be costly.
