So, just about had a stroke when the guy quoted me $260 a gallon for Valspar high build primer??? Is that the going rate for primer or should I be shopping around? I think to try to take the sting out of it he quoted me $80.00 per quart and said I should be able to do two or three coats twice ( 4 to 6 coats) but it doesn't seem like a quart is enough to do the car. Painting a 1968 2 door Dart shooting jambs, trunk, exterior etc etc but not painting the roof or hood. Thanks.

Not sure about Valspar, as I use PPG. But my friend recently bought a 'kit' from House of Color and it was under $150 for the gallon and it's a hybrid.

Find a buddy who knows someone that works in the business. I pay around $40 a quart around here.
You never know how much high build primer you will need, most of it is block sanded off. One car could take a quart or 3 gallons depending on how much blocking it takes to get straight.

Summit brand is way cheaper like 100 a gallon.
I have had no issues with it yet.

Southern polyeurathanes inc. 110.00gal activator 37.

Haven't done one in a few years but this was what we used to use a lot of and it is only $125 a gallon shipped. It is a great product.

They also have this but I personally have never used it.

I've found that you really have to shop around for certain things. Primer is one of them. I generally use Nason 2K primer. At one store, they sell it for $115 per 1 gal kit. At another, I get the same exact thing for $65 per 1 gal kit. The difference is the store's buying and markup philosphy. I spoke with the owner and he said, they buy it buy the container load and pass the savings on to their customers. They have 15 stores around the area and are doing very well. The other chain has 3 or 4 stores that are almost always dead when i go in...

Try Slick Sand. It's about $90 a gallon. It's basically spray bondo. It even smells like it. Sands easy,
but is very tough. Very high build. I love this stuff.

I'm using nason which is a dupont lower line...1 gal primer 126.95...1 qt activator 65.36 so you are for sure paying a lot for the valspar

Guess I'll shop around. Doing a nice driver quality paint job and don't want to skimp but it did seem pretty high in cost. Thanks.
