I am looking for the specs on an OLD cam I have-my dad grabbed it in the 70s so I dont know much about it

it is a 340 manual purple shaft-thats the story anyways
the guy pulled it out cause it was too much for his auto-prob stock converter

is this prob the correct one?from mopar performance
1 P4120655 Camshaft, 0.557"/0.557" Lift, 296/296 Adv. Duration

if so what are the rest of the specs-center angles, overlap ect

I have dyno2000 and am looking at different builds
its going into a 360 that has been worked-the 340 cam in it now is too small :)
its gonna come apart and measured up-needs more compression
doing this on no budget-using what we have

I had a 68 Dart GTS back in the mid 70's with a 360 from a 72 in it.
I had the engine rebuilt and the Guy who did it says he put in a "purple camshaft with the Hemi grind??? " into the car. The car had great power but one heck of a rought idle. You could count it fire it seemd like yet I drove it every day. Is this possibly same cam?

I also had a very thick soft cover manual I bought from chrysler dealer back then. It contained every setup, chasis, engine , rearend ect and what times to expect the car to run. DIRECT CONNECTION MANUAL??? Anyone remember that one.

The purple shaft "hemi grind cam" of yesteryear was a rather mild 284* /.484 lift. It was very popular back then and mimicked a street hemi cam. I used one or two myself at that time.

i have that book your talking about. big thick blue book. its my bible. love that book. it has tones of info for all the moters.

The Hemi grind cam is pretty mild in comparison to the one Volare has.

My buddy has that exact grind in a 340 right now,its not as radical as you would thing from reading the specs, acts kind of like a 292 hydraulic.Dont get me wrong its big but when you factor in the lash and the 110 ls it isnt what I consider really radical. He runs it on the street with 3.23s and a four speed in a 68 barracuda and it drives fine with no drama.

I have been looking at this cam, kinda scared with 3400-7200rpm....the 7200 seems a little tight for this cam...anyone have experience with this cam?

The original small block "hemi grind cam" back in the '70's was actually 284 duration, 471/474 lift with a 112 cl

3forty's right. The "OLD" DC Hemi grind from the 70's was speced out like he said. It got superseded with the one MP has which is a straight 280/.480 configuration.

Allright CUDAMAN51 , I want that book...Hand it over.

You are very lucky. I let mine go with the 68 Dart and regreted it ever since.

That cam sure seemed rough to me back then!!!!!!

Yea, I remember that as a mild 280/480 spec. The HEMi used slightly different numbers because it was a HEMI engine.

That 296 dur. cam is a stout unit. About 251 @ .050 IIRC.

I have a MoPar Performance catolog that has the "Tips" section and times sought listings. Great tip section. It's a shame they don't do it anymore.

Do you remember the part number or one of the current cams today that are close? I am looking for that rumbling idle again for my current 360. I am a little concern about the THUMPER series cam sounding nice but no power output out of that cam based on a few comments.

My buddy runs that solid in his dart with a 360ci.
He ported stock 360 heads and runs 13 to 1 comp.
Car has gone in the 10.40s at 126mph.

I have another friend who run's it in a 318 street car and goes 11.00s with it.
Both cars use only a carb (naturally aspirated) GREAT CAM!!!!!!!!

Found this old DCX Cam chart..Looks like this is the specs for the 290 cam...I know some of the old Racer Brown cams were very close r shared the same specs alo.

How can I ID a cam? I pulled a cam from a 318, and it has purple paint on it.
I was told is was way too lumpy and not a good street cam. Are there casting numbers or any other clues on how to find out exactly what it is??
thanks

The .557 purple shaft is the cam in my freinds 318, but i jumped the gun on my buddy's 360 \\\ He has the .590 lift purple shaft for his 360.
