Putting a 2010 Hemi in a 2005 Hemi Truck

Hey All

I have the opportunity to buy (at a good price) a wrecked 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi truck with 45,000 miles and everything under the hood in working order. I own a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi truck with 178,000 miles on it. Does anyone know if this engine swap is a plug and play or will there need to be major modifications?

It might not work. Physically they are the same, but I believe that in 2009 the 5.7 went to Variable Valve Timing. This required a totally different tune, requiring a different computer program. You'd have to swap over the harness and computer as well as a bunch of other stuff.

If you swap the '10 Hemi in place of the '05, the harness will have to go with it, thats to the newer Hemi.....As the variable valve timing would be non functional on the '05 just as an engine swap....BUT thats not to say the engine wouldn't run, it wouldn't have the timing thats of the same time frame as the original '05 truck, as they are the same physically.....

I would not quote me on that.....BUT, the newer motor would run the same IF the plug control on the engine was swapped out for the older one!

I have considered doing this on my 02 quadcab, but would like the variable valve timing to work. anybody know if this is even feasable ? all comments welcome---bob
 
I don't understand why it wouldn't be "feasible". The engine is a self contained unit. The issue would be to also swap in all the electronic peripherals. The 2010 computer, harness, sensors, perhaps even the trans and possibly the fuel pump.

It's not an inexpensive or quick swap by any means, but replacing the engine and swapping in a newer one shouldn't be much more of a chore than swapping one into a classic Dart. Just don't try to 5¢-10¢ the job.

If you're on a tight budget, don't bother. It won't be cheap.
 
Seeing as you are getting the whole truck it should be pretty easy. Once you have the old engine and tranny out, swap out the wiring harness's, the sensors and the computer. Once this is done, install the newer engine and tranny. It should work good. Of course, I could be wrong but I have owned Dodge trucks for the last 25 years including a 2011 Hemi right now. And I did stay at a Holiday Inn once. LOL
