Question on 69 Ignition System

Working with stock point system, What would cause the coil to get so hot to touch and burn Distributor Lead off? The Coil is hooked up -- to Dist and + to batt.?

Posted this for friend.Says he figured out what the problem was the wire was loose on the Dist side of Coil ? Thanks

For one thing, never let a breaker points system sit around with the key on.

(This actually includes many electronic systems)
