Soo. i'm a bit of a moron but i like to learn and i learn by asking :)

I have a 360 showing up today to make a 408 out of, (praying the block is good.. i only turns like 1/4" so.. not totally locked. hoping it's cyl rust.. will find out.)

Anyway.. spring question..

When looking at valve springs they list them as "for flat tappet" or "for hyd roller"

My main question is, are there differences in the actually spring material/design (without getting into exotic or high end racing stuff) or is it more of just a generalization to make picking springs easier for people like me that don't know about spring rates and such?

Reason i ask is i have trick flows with the hyd flat tappet springs but am using a hyd roller cam, Do the springs care as long as they have enough seat and OTN pressure?

I did the math and my OTN pressure for my setup should be 327# and these are the spring specs.

120 lbs. @ 1.900” Installed Height
394 lbs. @ 1.175” Open
390 lbs./inch Rate
.650” Maximum Valve Lift

This motor is strictly street and will rarely ever see over 6k. Wondering if i should switch springs while i have the heads off or if this should be fine for my setup.

Second quick question.. i am using the OEM hyd rollers in a roller LA block, i have tried lashing them from 1/2 turn to 2 turns (mancini/harland sharp rockers which i was told 1 turn on the adjuster is .040 lash) No matter what i still get noise and it's kind of random and my stupid brain can't ignore it.. i have read they they are noisy with a aftermarket cam due to faster ramps on the cams and such. Am consdering throwing morel solids in it, the sound of solids don't bother me (i kinda like it) and at least i know the noise is supposed to be there. Other thing is, my lifters are unknown mile OEMs that i cleaned and ran.. maybe just replace with a new set?

Thanks for reading this mess.... 7 am and i'm just overthinking at work :)

P.S. i didn't post cam specs cause it's on the smaller side and i don't want this to turn into (you need a .640 with 290@50 or don't bother) :) Just a street motor for fun and wants decent manners..

In the answer to question #1, I currently run the same heads with a howards roller cam with 274/278 advertised duration and 474/500 lift a pretty mild cam. No issues.

Flat tappet or hydraulic roller usually is solid flat tappet the spring pressure recommendations are usually very close.
I don't know what to do about the noise, sorry.
All I can say is you need a .640 lift with 290 @ .050 or don't even bother lol

Fwiw, hughes engines spec their first 4 listed hydraulic roller cams (up to 222/226 cam) for small block LA engines to use their valve spring #1110, which is the same 120lbs seat pressure spring listed for many of their hydraulic flat tappet cams.

ahh... didn't see that, thanks :)
