Quickest SBE 318 car?

What's the quickest stock bottom ended 318 car that you guys are aware of? I mean stock block, stock deck height, stock bore, stock rods, and stock pistons.
 
That's difficult because some of the fast ones are not stock bores. Usually .030 over or such. I know of some that are stock crank, rods, and such, but the really fast ones are over a little on bore....

I will say this, yesterday I raced a full size Dodge truck (2wd short bed 3600 lbs) with my low dollar 318 Duster. He also has a 318, stock cast crank, rods, but it was .040 over, but he installed 8.1 pistons, with 360 heads. Factory cast intake with a 800 dp Holley.
He blew me away... LOL. He has run 12.60's with it. All throttle, no bottle or boost

I did 12.54 @ 108 mph.........standard bore, cast pistons, cast crank


No power adders

I know of a turbo car going deep 10's, maybe 9's by now, but he's got an aftermarket forged rotating assembly in it. I'm gonna try and claim the "quickest sbe 318" title with my raggedy ole 318 Dart :) Here's my combo:

'73 Swinger, hopefully around the 3000-3100lbs mark
'70's 318, std bore, std deck height, honed for new rings
stock pistons, rods, and crank - no machine work at all
new rings and bearings
ARP head studs
J heads milled .060" and ported by a hack (me)
crappy single plane intake
QFT 750 carb with Hangar18 mods
Comp solid FT turbo cam
stock 273 adustable rockers
PTC 3500ish converter
904 w/ RMVB
8.75 3.23:1 SG
28" MT Pro Radials
$150 69mm eBay GT45 turbo
turbo kit made out of garbage and scraps (magnum manifolds)
4" fender dump
eBay air to water intercooler

Hi, a racer friend I know runs a 1978 Volare, 318 h.p. in stock eliminator. That is, stock: block,heads, rods, iron intake, crank, valves, carb, etc., etc. Full interior except for no back seat, runs 12.040 seconds on 9' tires. Leave the line like a rocket. Then falls on it's face. It's a riot to watch and he wins with the combination.
 
I do know of one that went about as 10 flat as you can go, but I believe it was .040 over and it also was sprayed with a small shot.

That's pretty cool! And people say 318's can't perform. :)

Not sure I follow you...is there a late model Charger cop car running around with a stock bottom ended 318 in it?

They can definitely do some damage with power adders, that's for sure. I think a 318 with decent ported iron heads and a plate kit would make for a fun street race money maker. :)

Hey, I'm OK with that attitude! Just makes the core motors cheaper! Try finding a core 360 for less than $100 anymore. I've got a couple spare 318's that hardly cost me anything. And it makes it that much more fun when you put a 340/360/BB loudmouth in his place. :D
 
Not quickest, but consistent-

There was a 30's Dodge open coupe that ran at Kill-Kare in OH.

Bone stock 318 except 4 barrel.

Ran 14.10 every single time, and won it's class nearly every week usually against 454 chevelles with slicks and cages.

That's the general rule of fast cars to a point. Even if you don't have any car knowledge, if you have enough money, you can pay somebody that DOES have the knowledge. That is why I pretty much let the world of $$$$$$ race right on by me..... while I play with a couple of hundred bucks.... and I think I'm having (and always had) the most fun!!!!!!! :)
 
Did you make a build thread? I am curious to see how the magnums fit when they are flipped. Do you have power steering? And I love the look of the build!

Well, I will have right around $5k tied up in the entire car. The car itself, motor, trans, converter, axles, disc brakes, turbo, fuel system...it doesn't necessarily take money to go fast, especially with a stock bottom end. I could probably throw some heads at it and make way more power, but good SBM heads are a budget killer. :/

Exactly. You do not have to have lots of money to go fast, but you can go fast if you have lots of money.

73 Dart-318/MPT70

The Magnum manifolds seem to fit well, but they will definitely not fit with power steering. They are hella close to my steering shaft too, I'm gonna have to grind on 'em a little as it is.
 
Well, the quickest person to chime in on the several forums I'm asking on has gone 11.70's with a Magnum motor. That's well within reach. :) There's no nitrous guys out there whacking a stock 318 with a 150 shot?
 
I wonder if fitment is different because you used a slant six k-frame? I've heard other members having to shim their motors and grind on the manifolds to keep them away from the steering box/shaft.
 
Nice read and a belated congrats on the house and son! Who is 8/9 by now? Whoa! Time he can pass you a wrench I think!
