ralley mirror repair?

My drivers side remote ralley mirror has one of the three cables frayed at the mirror end, can this be fixed? I have a similar ralley mirror of of something other than an a body, are the mirror heads interchangeable? looks like it has some metal ball in a slot that keeps tension on the cables, don't know wether to mess with it or not, don't wanna just toss it!

the mirror cable assembly can be taken apart and put back together again. Its not an easy task. The 3 cables need to back in the same locations, since the cotroller will only go in the door one way.
If this was a right door mirror I would be more inclined to fix it. Left mirrors are too common. Good luck.

How do you get any slack to get the ball ends he grppves look like they are peened over to keep the cable from slipping out, is this rightout of the groves, and t? I'll try to get some pics of what i'm working with. thanks for the reply though.
