well i normally don't like it when other people don't work on my car. but the transmission guy wants his quarter panel fixed and i needed a new torque converter put in. upon install of the converter a bolt was stripped out thanks to a friend.well all the holes were drilled and tapped to accommodate larger bolts. i'm not sure if that was the right thing to do. well eventually one bolt came loose!! i didn't hear it at all so not sure when it happend.lol anyway. bought the same converter and had this guy put it in. he owns sterling transmission here in town. well he put the converter in and told me to run it down the street and make sure it shifts fine. well it was hangin up in 2 which is only the cable adjustment and was no problem. wat is the problem is.. when i back out of his shop to run down the road. something was making a horrible "gargling" noise. kind of like a weird rattling. he couldn't figure it out. i notices some fresh scratches on the headers where he meet the insides of the tierod and pitman arm on the pass. side. so i drove into houston the the elderly man who built it. he works at a dealership . we put it on the lift and same thing. started it up. ran it on the lift and it wasn't making the noise!!! mr. marvin told me a few things irrelevant to the noise. so we dropped the car and i was on my way. i notice it makes the noise when im in a gear about 1800rpm and i get it on it. it gets louder. then right when it shifts , at the bottom of the next gear it wont make it till higher in 2nd... im confused..worried..pisssed.. any ideas?

Sounds to me like your drive plate may be bent/cracked. Drilling and tapping the converter bolt lugs for larger bolts shouldn't cause any problems. Next time, use some Loctite on the bolts though.

by drive plate, im assuming you mean flexplate?.. thats not very good. the tranny guy who did it mentioned somthing about it backing out and he'd drop it back down and check on it.. this isn't good....

James Langford in sugarland off Eldridge at Langford trans. is the best guy I know in this area.Cool old racer to talk with too.

thanks daredevil. i know exactly where that is. its down the street from out other shop paintnplace. i might have to stop in there . is he pretty knowledgable on mopars?

i had a cracked flexplate on my small block dart that sounds like the same thing it was cracked right were the bolts holt it to converter it was just a small crack and wasnt that bad. but it got a bit worse and everntually 3 of the wholes were cracked gud place to start might be flexplate

The rattle may be a cracked flex plate or may be a cracked neck on the converter that goes into the front pump. Those stripped torque converter threads were supposed to be repaired with helicoils. It never a good idea to drill the holes in the flex plate larger or use a flex plate with "egg shapped" worn holes.
One more point I should mention... IF you use a longer bolts there and the bolt end dimples the torque converter case (behind the nut blocks) the converter can be damaged internally.

Did you use the special bolts that are made for the flexplate ?

The head is thinner on them.

yes i used the flexplate bolts.. had to get them through the dealership. i noticed it did get a bit worse today. the transmission guy called me early yesterday morning and said he was scratchin his head all weekend and couldn't figure it out and that he would get me in asap. well i found out through you guys what it most likely is. if not narrowed it down. this sumbitch still has no clue. i think ill just change the flexplate and be done with it. last time he touches my ****:thebirdm:
