I am putting a 318 back together and the rear main seal that came with the gasket set has the little wings on it but the cap on this particular engine doesn't have the grooves. Should I cut the wings off and install it staggered or just buy another seal without them?

Why would you cut them off?

The seal isn’t designed to be offset. That’s a horrible hack.

Do a search on here. I’ve explained how to correctly fit a seal several times.

Fit it correctly and it won’t leak.

can you refresh our memory on that one, for ya know, the ones at the back of the class who weren't paying attention?

Why would I cut them off? I dont know maybe because you can't physically install them with the wings. Like I said in my original post, this cap is NOT machined for the wings.

I pulled the part numbers off the seals that were in there. Looks like Chrysler used two wingless seals and offset them like you would a 360. I'll buy another set of seals and use the two wingless ones together. The hack way that Chrysler did it.

I oil the seal contact lip then offset the seals and use a little dab of silicone at each end.... and I have never had a rearmain seal leak. I also run a light bead across each side of the cap.

Do whatever you want, but offsetting the seal is WRONG and I don’t care who claims that bullshit hack.

I guess.

The seal
Is like a bearing in that it has crush to make it seal.

Offsetting it doesn’t crush it correctly. Would you grind off the tangs and offset a bearing? Some might but I wouldn’t. Same difference.

You have to fit the seal in the block and the cap and measure how far out of the block and cap it is.

.005-.010 per side is ALL you need.

If the seal is proud of the cap more than that, you grind off the seal until it’s between .005-.010 proud and no more.

A LIGHT touch of sealer on the ends of the seal and it won’t leak.

Offsetting the seal is wrong.

318 magnum and some 318 roller motors did not use the older seal with wings. You want to use enginetech S0605 or felpro BS40181 which are viton double lip wingless seals
