The original hardware I have is toast on my '74 Dart Sport, so I'm replacing the rear upper shock studs. I've looked around for the replacement parts and I am wondering if there is any concern to just buying a grade 8 bolt with 3 washers and a nut per side to secure the shock to the shock mount? I would sandwich the shock between the washers (a buffer for the bushing) and then have a washer on the trunk side where it fastens down. Is there any worry to this setup? I know the washers wouldn't have the correct curve like the replacement kits have, but it will save me a good bit of cash.
If it is OK to proceed with this idea . A bolt size of 5/8" fits but has some wiggle room between it and the bushing, while a 3/4" takes a bit of force (aka hammer taps) to push through. My thoughts would be to use the 3/4" since there is no play between the bolt and the shock bushing. Right/wrong?
I have searched the forumns quite a bit but haven't found anything. Any help the experts out there could offer I would appreciate. This is my first project and while I'm looking to do it right, I also have a budget like everyone else and have no intentions of maintaining an "original" product, so aftermarket ideas are right up my alley.
Thanks in advance for all the help!
