I have to change the converter, the old has broken sprocket.
I have been offered good used converters, but have been asked about red or blue. The one I have now are blue, but what's the difference between it and the red?

Good question :coffee2: We just had a 904 rebuilt and the new TC was black.

For the record. All of my 904 equipped stuff (except my '84 D50) had Blue converters and Slant 6's or 318's

The D50 had a black converter (but it was also running an MA904, which is a TF904 with a special bellhousing to bolt to a 2.0L gas/2.3L diesel/2.6L gas)

I swapped the guts into a Small block TF904, and used the Torque Converter from a Slant 6 (225) 904, behind a 273 in the truck. The /6 Converter was also blue, and came from a '71 904

...........This may not mean much but any 904 converter i've seen till 67 was red.......68 later was blue...........kim..........

Thank's guys!
Is there any problem if I use a converter from a /6?
I will check the tranny part no. tomorrow.
My car is a mix, motor (273) is 65, body 63 (Dart GT), brakes 65 (KH discs), tranny?
I thought the tranny was from 65 as the motor.

I believe stock V8 T.C stall at 1800,were as the stock 6 cyl T.C stalls at 2100-2200.So you would like the 6cyl one better for your application.JMO:D

I checked the number on the gearbox this morning. And guess what, the number 4028464 equals to Dart 76 318 ci.
I had never guessed.
Bought the car with the motor and gearbox, so the mixture is not a recipe of my own.
Will take you advise and look for converter from a /6.

Your going to run into a problem using a 76 trans. behind a 65 engine. The pilot button on the front of the converter that engages into the crankshaft changed size in 68. Prior to 68 the pilot button diameter was 1.53", 68 and newer they are 1.81". The input shaft also changed spline count the same year. If your positive the engine is a 65 you need to find a 67 or older trans. and converter or tear your 76 down and acquire all the front end parts from a 67 and install them.

Just a thought since Kim said all the converters he's seen made prior to 68 were read and 68 and up were blue maybe that's something the factory did along with the spline and pilot change to identify them.

I have had the combination engine and transmission mounted in the car earlier.
It is surely as you say, the pilot button diameter is smaller in the 65 engine.
The strange thing is that I have rebuilt the engine during the winter and 100% sure I have a forged crank that is a crank from a 273. Someone must have machined rear end of the crank.
Have now found a converter, but it comes from a 360 so I have to grind away the counterweight which is mounted on the converter.

Ahh... you got lucky. It's also possible someone put a 68 or 69 273 crank in it before you got it. They had the larger pilot.

i'am just wondering what year of 360 convertor your trying to use? most '77 and up were lockup except some trucks

Cuted and pasted from Allpar.
"A-904 transmissions from their inception until 1967 have 18 splines in the input shaft. Non-lockup transmissions from 1968 have 27 splines.
Lockup 904 transmissions appeared in 1978, and have 26 splines. A-500 overdrive transmissions also have 26 splines. The output shaft has 25 splines."
The 360 converter fit the transmission, so it has 27 splines.
