Necessary? Had to remove the oil pump to replace the seal. One guy suggested I just loosen the oil filter, remove the coil wire, and crank until I see oil coming out around the filter. Never heard of this, has anyone else?

Sure, the filter is the first thing the pump sees. I often did this on a new engine because it relieves "head pressure" against the pump and makes it easier for the pump to prime, plus then you KNOW you are "on the way."

If the engine has been recently run, I'd do that, fill the filter before you install it, and go.

I guess my thinking is the filter is already full of oil, and when I loosen it, oil is going to run out of it naturally. But what I think you are saying is, loosening the filter will allow the pump to prime faster and thereby shoot the oil back to the filter when you are cranking it. If so, won't the filter have to refill itself once again taking longer to get circulated through the engine?

if this pump is the one you have already ran before and it has oil in it it is not necessary to prime the pump

if you replaced the pump then just run some oil through it before you install it and it will be fine no priming necessary

Same pump, I just had to disconnect it in order to drop the rear main. Oil was emptied out of when I disconnected it. I wouldn't think you would have to prime, but wasn't sure about loosening the oil filter as stated above.

dont worry about the draining out it will push that air out very fast its just not a big deal. many poeple if not most dont put oil in there filter when they do a oil change and no issues at all just run it
