Replacing a bad vacuum advance diaphragm

1970 dart swinger 225 slant six with stock distributor. The vacuum advance diaphragm is bad. When I tested it by sucking on the hose it leaked air like a seive. I ordered a new one that's supposed to come in today. Anyone here had to do this before? Any tips for putting it in?
The funny thing is the car seems to run fine with it not functioning.
 
Just keep track of your distributor orientation. You can do it usually without pulling the breaker plate. Pry up on the breaker plate to disengage the pin on the vacuum pod and go. Two screws and you should be ok. It actually ran ok because you were able to get good mechanical timing without over advancing from the vacuum. Make sure you get one of the later model units that is adjustable.
 
It will run fine, you could just get better fuel economy with it working.

Never done one on a slant 6 before, but it couldn't be that much different from V8's.
On the 8's you just take out the two screws holding it to the body of the distributor and ease it out from under the breaker plate.
V8's just have a little stud on the arm that moves the plate that sticks up through the breaker plate and lifting the plate gently lets it drop down out of the plate so it comes off.

The one I ordered was a BWD V192,it was the only one the auto parts store had listed in the computer. Is this the later model adjustable type you mentioned?
 
Can you post a video of you "testing" the diaphragm???
 
BTW, V189, V192 and V194 all are listed to cover your year but no more spec's are in the BWD catalog except the Mopar original PN's. You can find the BWD catalog online; this is in catalog 2 of the Engine Management Illustrated Parts Guide.
 
Vacuum advance specs/info, see here. The later-type units fit '72-up breaker plates with two advance arm holes (they use the inner hole). The early-type units hook into the outer hole of that type, or the only hole of the '71-down breaker plates. Sooner than later you're going to want to ditch the points and do the HEI upgrade .
 
Thanks Guys,the auto parts store got the wrong part TWICE,Lol! Just picked it up yesterday morning will try and fix it this Sunday and let you know how it turns out.
