Got the headers off manifolds back on only have about 12 inches of downpipe is that enough to drive it to muffler shop without risking valve warp?

I couldn't do it myself, as I have seen more pipe and still warped the valves.
Just a personal opinion from seeing it happen.

Running manifolds helps retain more heat but still not worth the risk to the motor.
 
I personally believe the valve warping claims are nonsense. Some of the aircraft stuff had incredibly short stacks, and remember, these operate at times at incredibly low temperatures, at upwards of 20K feet over Europe in WWII

How far you going ? Iron manifolds ? Now this is just me,but I raced a big block with 18'' off the manifolds with no problem.Again just a thought..
