Some say to install them dry, some say use a spray sealant, and others say to scrap the paper gaskets altogether and just use one of the modern sealants in a tube. What say y'all?

I just put mine back in.
Used the "Indian Head" shellack.
It's in a bottle with a brush, just applied it to both sides of the gasket.
That's all I have ever used.
No leaks.

I've done all of the above and pretty much just settled with good quality RTV. Every time I used a gasket it would stick around the studs and take more time to clean off etc... I've had no leaks with the silicone. Just make sure you get enough grease out of the housing it doesn't dribble across your gasket surface when you get it dry and clean. No sealant at all on the shaft gaskets.

I forgot all about that stuff. I used it a few years back for something on my LS-swapped 69 Camaro, and now I can't remember what it was. It was recommended to me for a specific application, and it worked well. I probably still have the rest of the bottle laying around somewhere.
