I've got a new balancer for the 318, figured as long as I'm in there I'll put a front seal in it. Now... if the old seal would just come out...

Tried catching the edge with a screwdriver, no dice. I even put a small gear puller on it, didn't budge. I wasn't planning on replacing the whole timing cover...:banghead:

Suggestions?

When a seal is totally exposed and can be pulled from the face side, I often put a punch mark in the center of its metal face and run drill point sheet metal screw in it. Sometimes I need to pull the screw with pliers, Other times the point end of the screw hits a shoulder inside and jacks the seal right out. The trick is not to damge anything other than the seal. This works for axle seals in fwd trans housings and many more.

Not all front seals are removeable from the front. Earlier engines must have the cover removed and the seal replaced from the inside.
