Tonight around 9:40 pm the Bayer Crop Science Plant in Institute, West Virginia had an explosion. Yeah, Not a good thing. It was just 1/2 mile on the other side of Goff Mountain from where I work as a waitress. It was so strong it shook our building, and broke windows for 3 miles. One person was killed at the plant and several are injured and or missing. There is a cloud encompassing the plant. No one is saying what is is , YET

Law enforcement had us evacuate my workplace within a few moments of this. I made it home through the back roads. I-64 that I usually travel to get home is closed. It passes right by that plant.

I live with my husband and 2 sons in South Charleston, 10 miles away. we are now under a Shelter In Place Order. The Ac is off, I have covered all the air vents and anywhere air from the outside can get inside.

The plant that blew-up and is on fire is Bayer Crop Science Plant in Institute, West Virginia one of the USA's largest pesticide and fertilizer plants.

25 years ago, that plant produced the same chemicals that killed all those innocent people in Bopal India.:angry7:

Keep all of us here in your thoughts and prayers

I Hope to keep you all updated.

PS news station just announced the possible chemical that caused the fire is called MYTHOMYL (?)

Hunker down and I will see if I can find more info.
Keep the boys and David in and don't beleave everything you hear.
I am on it know. God bless and prayers are on there way.

pesticide and fertilizer's are not good, water down some towel to breath through and stay where you are and I am looking for the todo's know.

Oh We've hunkered down... The ac is off the doors and windows are closed and covered. The Floor vents are covered and there are wet towels at the bottoms of the doors. I have the TV on and David and the boys are asleep right now. The kids do not know what is happening but David knows. I am on post til around 4 and then He'll get up and hopefully then I will get some rest. The roads are still closed and the "tornado sirens" are still blasting off. Here in "The chemical Valley of the USA", were are used to drills for shelter in place, but this is the first one in 10 years that I can remember being so dangerous.
Oh I am afraid, but I know GOD is watching over us and we will be OK, Mike.
If the shelter lasts any longer, we may just make a break for it and get out of town to Clay County 50 miles north where my parents home is. They are not there, they are in Ohio visiting family. I called my mom and she said as soon as we could to get our butts up there and get away from all this stuff.

The sky is still glowing orange from the fire 10 miles away, and there is a thick smoke that is blocking out the street lights.

More updates to follow

Here is the latest news, But I have learned there has been a bad smell and glowing clouds over the building.

The explosion happened at at 10:40 pm just moments ago.
I will go to the weather Chanel and see witch way the wind is blowing.
Do you live north ,east south or west of the plant.

Wow...head down. Gas masks on. Phone handy. Food. Water.

YIKES!

It looks to be some unpleasant stuff.

This is the sort of thing that has me considering a really good water filtration system on the house supply line.

Stay safe and trust your gut.
:protest::bs::blob6::banghead:

If we make it through this, WE'RE MOVING!!!!!

My home has The main BAYER aka Union Carbide 2 blocks east AND Clearon, the worlds largest chlorine plant 2 blocks the the West... anyone want to buy a 2 BR 1 Bath house? :poke:

The wind is very low by my radar 0 to 3 mph and heading to the north north east. this is good for you!!! it should move to the north of the plant.
keep still for know and let me make a call.
I wish I could make you not be afraid, and settle your hart.
But I am here to talk to. I will be back.

Crap. I'd move too. Chlorine and I don't get along. Is the occurrence of various cancers on the high side in that area?

Years ago, a chemical plant went *boom* about 8 miles from where I grew up. The authorities never locked our area down as the prevailing wind was in our favor. We kept a close eye on wind direction and were ready to make tracks. I remember the orange plume. It's a spooky experience.

YEAH ! :angry7:

The main hospital Charleston Area Medical Center CAMC just finished adding a 5 story Oncology unit to their giant 20 acre facility. There are over 20 pages of cancer specialists listed in the capital city of Charleston alone.

Let me put it to you another way... The way it was put to me tonight... If anyone decided to hurt the US, Kanawha ( pronounced KA- naol- wah) County is probably # 2 on the list next to DC. Within 30 miles you have Dupont petrol-chemical plant in Belle, BAYER/ Union Carbide, Clairon in South Charleston, Rhone Paulanc chemical plant Bayer Crop Science, FMC in Institute, and the South Charleston Union Train Stations Chemical tanker yard (across the 4 lane from us :@:) AND all these in the same county I reside in.!!!!!!!

:angry7:

A man named Mike way said it was a waist area that exploded
and I feel good that you are 10 miles away
he said it was diemethonol that exploded the best I can spell it.:dontknow:

Me, David and the kids are OK. :happy5: :angry3::shock:8-[

Well, We're still breathing..<<<Hack, cough, wheeze>>>

There is still smoke and fog out there this morning and all the nay sayers at the plant say that the chemical was sustained at the plant and only a small amount "escaped". One person died and another was sent to the burn unit at Pittsburg, PA.

The concussion busted out windows on the campus of West Virginia State University which was adjacent to the plant. At my work place Golden Corral Rest., and many homes in Institute and the city across the Kanawha River of St. Albans windows broken, smoke damage and business closed.

The blast reportedly shook the ground 50 miles away.

They call our state Almost Heaven. Last night some of us thought we were closer than that for many hours.:clock:

:angry7:

Pray for the families of the people hurt in this most dangerous event.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.:angel7:
And MEMike, we are across the river about 7 miles from the Capital building in Charleston.

~Mary

Glad to here you and the family good.
