So, my neighbors car is dead, and had asked if i could pick up his 17 yr old son from school the other day. I say sure no sweat.

I go to the High School, get there about 30 min before school is out and park in the student lot.

What is up with some high school kids today. How can they afford some of the cars they drive?

When i was in high school 81-84, the lot was full of 5 to 10 yr old cars. I drove my 64 Dodge, my neighbor drove a 76 Datsun, another neighbor drove a 77 Bug, there were a few muscle cars but a lot of them were beaters.

Today, the lot is full of BMW's new Subaru SRX's and other pretty new imports and some newer cars, less than 10 yrs old. Are these kids parents buying these cars for them, i know a high school kid, especially these days isnt making a $300-400 a month car payment by them selves, any of you guys have high school parking lots like this?

The cool thing? I park the Coronet in front of the office, in the visitor parking. Got a few "WOW"! remarks and stuff like that behind my back as i walked in.

I go to the kids lounge and let him know i am there and will meet him at the car in front.

I go back out and there are about 10 kids hanging out at my car, one guy in a ricer mobile checking it out. They all wanted to know what it was and what engine and how fast. The kid with the riced Honda says the engine really looks easy to work on, and maybe he should get a car like this.

Pretty neat.

Yep. That's how it works. It is probably 60/40 on kids who buy their own cars and whose parents buy them for em. One girl in my grade drives a Mercedes SUV because her mom is a lawyer. Makes me sick to hear kids complain about their free cars that mommy or daddy bought them. There are also kids who get hand-me-down vehicles too.

Ive been out of highschool for around 4 years now. But recently when I drove by there was a new dodge challenger hemi parked in the student lot. And to comfirm its a students car ive seen the girl driving it around town. Had to have been bought by parents.

my friend is a high school teacher. the student parking lot is filled with bmw's audi's and a bunch pf import racers with hoover vaccum exhausts tips too. He always jokes and says the students drive newer/nicer cars than he does. its the same everywhere. parents are spoiling their kids.

It is kind of cool how kids wow over old muscle cars. I know it makes my day to have his head stuck out the window of his ricer telling me how much he likes my car. Their Hondas and wxr are their muscle cars. Granted I drove a POS all wrecked on drivers side a 60 Thunderbird as I recall. The student parking lot held about 20 cars in those days. It was a huge deal to have a set of wheels. Mom and dad kicked in zero to keep my car on the road. I learned to fix everything myself. Times sure have changed very few motorheads in school today.

I had a real good laugh a couple of years ago. I drove my grandson to school one day in the Demon. He is a computer geek and not into cars at all. There were lots of kids around when I dropped him off and I got the usual nice car comments. He came home that afternoon and asked if I could drive him to school more often. He had suddenly become the focus of attention from the car guys, but more importantly from a few young ladies. LOL

Yeah, i get remarks from kids in little rice mobiles all the time. I think they really would drive a older car if they could find one. But it probably has to do with their parents wanting them in something safe with airbags and such.

In my high school, the teachers cars were about on par with the student cars. Everyone drooled over one of the teachers Scirocco(sp) Didnt know what the big deal was, i have always hated VW's

My highschool car was a 70 Chevy Impala. I worked on it all the time. The richey rich drove newer cars (graduated in 82) so newer cars at the time. Kids today have no idea what it is like to EARN your wheels. Some kids do but most don't.

You were a geek or wierdo if you drove an import at my highschool. Most of us drove good ole fashion american 60's and 70's cars and trucks.

Back in my high school days, 66-70)the fastest car was a black 65 Sport Fury hardtop 426 StreetWedge 4 speed. He was finally dethroned by a 427 Yenko Camaro (bought by rich daddy).
One of my friends occasionally drove his dad's 67 Coronet R/T 440/ 4speed but mostly we drove beaters.
I impressed a bunch of people when I drove my dad's new Coronet cop car.
440/auto with the left turndown moved forward about a foot. We told everybody that it was a 383 4bbl. Some of my tire marks are still visible!
That was the day my car 'would not start' and I had an important test to take.
Our automotive instructor had an A108 Dodge van. It was a 318/727 that was replaced by a brand new 340 for 'extra' towing power. He was a true Mopar man. We won the 1968 National Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest because of him.

There were a few muscle cars in my parking lot, 67 442, 70 Challenger, 70 Charger 500, a huge 70-71 Chrysler, man that was a big car, and i drove a 64 C body back then. My dad had a A108 van too.

Yup, it sure has changed since I was in high school.

We had a pretty big lot, with some nice cars, some beaters and run of the mill drivers. Fastest car was a '69 GTO, only cause my buddy had dropped out, he had a kick *** fast Gremlin. I had my '69 Sport Satellite, don't recall if I had dropped in the 383 before I graduated or not, but even with the 318 it was pretty good for the day. This was '80/'81.

My best bud drove a '71 Pinto. Boy, we had some good times in that car.

I don't remember anyone having a brand new car, especially something of the caliber of today's BMW's and Audi's, etc. I think we were too down-to-earth in our town. Now there isn't even an auto shop class in my old high school.

It's a shame.

And yes, kids today are way too spoiled. Some parents just don't get it.

Well, my high school days were pretty recent compared to most of you. I graduated in 2005, I'm 23 now...My senior year, I bought my first car, which was a 70 Dart 225 slant 6, green on green. (which i still have, theres a thread in the members restorations) A lot of kids really liked that car. My buddy had a 71 chevelle that he bought for 8 grand, his parents helped pay half. so it had a nice blue paint job with white racing stripes, and a 350..so it always got more attention than mine did...lol but yes, there were some spoiled kids that parents had bought there kids...BMW, Mercedes, Subarus...

I have been out of school for four years now, I drove my 64 1/2 mustang, my dad and I restored ground up. There was a kid who though he was cool cause he drove a monsterously huge international pickup that was all hot rodded. When I started driving my mustang he suddenly started driving a 70 impala fastback.
We didn't have too many old cars in our lot, 67 camaro, a 66 mustang fastback, my mustang and then my English teacher drove a restored 57 chevy.

A couple new vettes and bmws. One maserati.

And to think I won best car my senior year.

That kind of money doesn't substitute for good parenting, and from my experience t's pretty rare that a kid gets both.

This is what my son drives to High School........ in fact he was voted student with the best car! Thats way better than the honor student bumper sticker! LOL

Believe me , a Mercedes suv is probably the biggest pieces of crap on the road.
I work on them for a living and they are my biggest money maker.
This one was probably a hand me down because dad was tired of breaking down on the way to work so he gave it to his kid to beat on some more. LOL.

Not to take away from the fact alot of the highschool kids are driving nicer cars these days, nothing different than when I went to school just much more kids combined with parents who are in debt up to their gills.

Seriously though, there is nothing more expensive than a used Mercedes.
People think they are all that but they are all hype and stereotype.

PS, hemimark, your Son's car is bad ***.
Lucky kid.

There are more spoiled kids because people have more money. I do have a slight disagreement with the statement that used Mercedes are all pieces of crap. My wife and kids drive them and love them. The kids paid me for theirs. It was my wifes old car. Not all are good. From what I have researched most built in the last 10 years are crap. The sweet spot is 95-99 those are well designed and well built vehicles. There are some issues with these cars but nothing major.

My brother graduated in 1970, in the student lot were a few of his friends cars, 69 Z-28 & a 69 GTX! Dad's were Dr's. Go figure

jkeck55- interestingly, in NY when someone asks for a used car recomendation, I tell them to shy away from 96-99 models because of the online hookup to the state for inspection- a check engine light can ruin your day and your bank account...

My Dad got me a 94 toyota truck when I was in high school in 98. It was lifted and had big wheels and tires. Nice compared to what most of the other kids in the school were driving at the time. Some of the other kids would give me a hard time about how I was a spoiled by daddy. I would just say "Sorry my dad made some thing of him self and can afford to buy nice things for his family."

I forgot. Hemimark your kids car is way cooler than my kids car.

Thanks Dude.......... I bought that one for 700.00 dollars and did everything myself except the body and paint work.......... Gave him the tires and wheels from my Orange Duster. I just install a 318 (that i got for free for preping a Demon for a Hemi install) for being a good driver and keeping grades up.......

I went to HS '90-'94 in a rural district. I don't remember any "new" cars (even among the teachers), most kids drove early-'80s beaters- Escorts, K-cars, Civics and Camrys. If there were "ricers" then, we didn't know it; the hot cars were '80s Camaros and Foxbody Rustangs. The fastest car in school was also the oldest, a triple-green '69 Valiant Signet w/ a 383 swapped in. That guy fooled quite a few would-be hotrodders before they got wise. My slant-powered '70 Dart looked similiar, but didn't get me as much, um, "action" for some reason.

I had a friend with a sweet '77 Tbird and a friend with a not-so-sweet (but still fun to beat on) '76 Chevette Scooter. We all paid for our cars ourselves, and all paid somewhat less than a thousand bucks.

Which is the problem as I see it- a teenager's earning power has not kept pace with used car prices. Also, the days of "soccer moms" carrying the entire team in the back of a '76 Volare wagon and nobody batting an eye are over for good. Even a beater "needs" airbags, antilock brakes, et cetera.

I just got out of high school last year. Our lot had some new cars in it like new mustangs and such. Those did piss me off a little, one kid had a brand new v-6 mustang and his buddies made fun of him for not having a v-8 (they didnt either), so he went crying to his daddy and he got a brand new v-8. Another kid with a newer mustang wadded his up in a ditch. Most of the kids today don't appreciate having a vehicle because if they wreck it their mommies and daddies would bail them out.
