This is the only thing that ever worked for me and thought I'd share.... Yes, Merlin's already been hit at the new place.

"So. You or your dog or even a part of your house has been sprayed by a skunk, and now you want to get rid of the smell.
These tactics WILL NOT work very well:

Bath in tomato juice
Spray with lemon or orange citrus
Masking agents like perfume or Fabreze
How do you eliminate the odor once you have been sprayed by a skunk? Well first of all, you or your dog should have known the warning signs ahead of time. A skunk will give many clear signals before it sprays. If threatened, it will stamp its front feet, arch its back, and shuffle away. If you don't leave right away, it will turn its posterior toward you, raise the tail, and release the smelly musk, a sulfur-alcohol compound, from special glands near the anus. This spray not only stinks, but burns and can cause temporary blindness if it is sprayed directly into the eyes. Since you (or your dog) didn't take heed and got sprayed, here is how to get rid of the smell:
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible."

Little bastages.....

I used to trap skunks when I was a kid. You could get a whole $2.50 for a skunk hide. They seldom sprayed as they didn't seem to like the smell much better than we do. I always tried to locate the trap in a fairly confined area. Once in a great while one would spray a trap and surroundings. Of course to handle the skunk or traps it was inevitable to get at least some stink on hands. I used the recipe above and it worked great. Soak the hands in baking soda solution after washing. If we didn't have enough peroxide around the farm I would substitute white vinegar. It works OK too. Just not as well as HO.

now you tell me...LOL
we let our dog out to do her business and she got sprayed in the back yard
we let her in and did not know she got sprayed
she was rubbing her fur on the carpet and furniture to get the smell off her...all the furniture and carpet had to be replaced as we could not get the smell out
thanks for the recipie I will save it for next time...good to know

Gonna file this one away for sure. Although we survived being skunk free last summer, it's inevitable that our dense dog is gonna forget not to chase those black cats with white stripes next summer..

Grant,

Yep, this works on carpet and furniture if it hasn't got to far into padding and such. Key is to coral them before they get into the house and wash 'em with this and be sure to rinse them off right away. It's hard on the pets skin as well as yours. Use gloves if can.

Maxi got hit about 3-4 years ago by one that was big as a turkey platter. I walked out the back door and here was this huge hissing black V-striped bastard just ready to go. Maxi jumped in front of me like a secret service agent and took the full blown hit. MG, that was bad and I tried everthing. This was the only thing that worked.

I thought that this was going to tell us how to make a "potion" to smell like a skunk.

There is a product called Skunk Off that works. A little pricey because you get it at the vets, but it works. Besides, at that time money is no object.

Did you know for a skunk to spray he used his back legs for constriction, that squeezes the gland and releases the spray. This is true.

So what you do is just as he is turning to spray you pick it up by the tail.

Good luck with that!

Joe, I thought I smelled skunk on one of the dogs Saturday when we were playing!

Good luck with evicting the fella!!!

Now that you have Maxi and Merlin there the skunks will more then likely leave
The sent of a predator in the area should send them packing

I hope they are long gone now :glasses7:
Thank you for the info, I was hit when I was a young 12 year old and seems like Borax and Hydrogen peroxide and lie soap was in the mix. Just got my right leg and shoe when I was walking in an apple orchard in Michigan :D

I hope they move on down the road now that merlin and Maxi is on the property.

my sister had a problem with them in nj. was visiting one day and let her dog out. dog wanted back in so i opened the door. just as i did my sister yelled not to. to late. dog headed straight for her room & jumped on the bed.

Our "adopted" guy is just a little clueless. He got sprayed twice in 2009, and three times in 2010. Still can't figure it out.

One of them was so bad, my wife got sent home from work from just being in the same room when he came in, I was razzed everyday by customers who upon opening the door to our store were hit with it from me, and needless to say, the house smell lingered for at least a month.

My wife has a picture of me standing in my gotch in the shower using that "Skunk Off" on the pooch.. I was less impressed than he, for sure!
