ok so mopardaddy sent me an hei ignition plug and play coil from classichei.com. i have a dual pick up distributor with four wires coming out of it and i dont know how to wire it. i am hoping someone here has done this before and is willing to help me with it.

I sware i dont know why he likes that HEI crap . Your truck Should already have the E ignition On it . I would just leave it alone .

Run the two twisted together bare ended wires coming from the ECU to the two wires for the "Run" pickup and disconnect the "Start" pickup wires from the system.
You will run off the "Run" pickup only.
Ground the ECU well wherever mounted and connect the coil power wire (Red also bare ended) to the + wire that goes to your current coil.
Retime it, and regap your plugs to .045 and you are done.

OK. Thank you that was the most useful piece of information I have gotten and been looking for all day, with a lot of access to information from master techs that I work with. But a few questions if you don't mind.
1. Disconnect the start pick up? Like totally clip it and seal it off? Don't I need that to start the /6?

2. What should the timing be set to after this?

3. Assuming here. I don't have vacuum advance like in your very helpful diagram, I don't think that matters in my situation. True?

4. I am considering buying a timing light this weekend, any cost effective recommendations?

Thank you again very much. I really appreciate the help.

I have an autozone special timing light thAt works just fine for basic timing.

#3 is true. The single pickup /6 distributor operates on run only essentially, so the answer to #1 is no, you don't need the other pigtail to start the engine

OK so if I get a new distributor? Replace with stock or?

Why replace distributor? Are you asking in case it's ever needed? If that's the case, then you should be able to just replace it with a 73-80 /6 dizzy. I'm sure TB will chime back In. That's his email addy on the bottom of the instruction sheet.

No because the inside of mine is all rusty and nasty. And I want to recurve it.

Some of those dual pickup distributors do NOT have mechanical/ vacuum advance. What are you doing there?

there is a good one for sale on here for 30 bucks shipped . I never sell mine never know when your going to need one lol

I guess idk what I am doing with distributor. I will wanna try this with a stock replacement distributor. No recurve or whatever. ( Idk what I am talking about with that) but this will eliminate the lean burn computer correct????

You didn't describe your car or truck. I am guessing maybe 78-82 Volare/Aspen or truck (lean burn years?). If your distributor doesn't have a vacuum advance, I'll bet it doesn't have centrifugal advance either. The "spark computer" probably did that electronically (true in my 82 Aries). If so, it will run very poorly at higher rpm and maybe overheat your exhaust. Get a standard electronic distributor (~73-76) w/ vacuum advance and should be a fine "stand-alone" ignition system.

Yes sorry its a 1981 d150 with spark control. I want to eliminate the spark control.

That's the answer.
Thanks Bill :)

OK thank you. So with a vacuum advance distributor and my gm hei do I need to mess with the carb? Where do I connect the vacuum for vacuum advance at the carb?

Don't worry about hooking up vacuum advance. When you recurve the dizzy you will time it to a certain degree. I can't remember to which degree right now. I'm sure someone else does though

You need to get a drawing or manual for your carb to find the "spark timing" tube. It is usually about 1" above the base. There is probably a vacuum line running to your spark control computer. If so, that is probably the correct port to use, but I don't know the details of those controllers (maybe they used full manifold vacuum). If you have the carb off, the "spark port" should go to slots in the throat that get gradually exposed by the throttle plate as it turns. If you put a little water in the suspect port and blow air thru, you should see it come out those slots.

OK. Well dizzy is on order. I have a timing light and gapper. Looking to do install this week sometime.
