slip yoke movement

How loose should the slip yoke be in a 904 tailshaft? I can move the yoke up and down in the tail, shouldn't it be tight?

They do move around slightly, but as long as the seal does not leak from the movement you should be good.
If you are concerned about it you could always take the tail section off and a trans shop can change the bushing and seal really cheaply.

Allow for 1" of travel.

I think he means up and down or side to side slop, not in and out travel....
