hi all.

whats the usual culprit on a 727 when it wont allow you to start out in drive without putting it in neutral first and waiting a moment for the converter to fill. front pump maybe? u can put it in drive and go when its hot only. even then when driving though it seems to slip a bit (car not keeping pace with engine revs) especially up a grade. yes i know a rebuild is likely but just looking for a possible cause thats maybe well known and gives those symptoms?

Old rubber lip seals can cause the odd drive problems (Possible clogged filter also)
Converter drain back is usually the pump bushing letting the fluid run back into the trans, and since these only circulate fluid in neutral in thier stock form it takes a bit in neutral to fill the converter back up.

When the rubber seals get hot they get softer and will end up flaring out and sealing.
This is a sure sign of immenent failure.

before pulling the trans, you could try a fluid & filter change. if you have already done that you might want to get a rebuilt unit somewhere that you can swap in.

yeh ive done the fluid and filter change thing and even a shift kit but none of it solved the above problem. there was a decent amount of metal shavings in the pan which is tell tale but we hoped for the best and tried this route first. so nobody thinks it may be the front pump getting tired as well?

To many park starts over the years wear parts . Read the dip stick . If it tells you to check fluid in neutral then start it in neutral. If you check fluid in park then start it in park. Live by this for all makes and models and they live longer. This is fact I don't care what BS anyone else says. Guys that reach in their cars and tap the key in park and start them don't know how much damage they are doing. Never idle , Rev or tune a car with a torqueflight in park. This is the worse thing you can do to a trans. Unless that front pump is pumping fluid there is no lube to any moving parts. Always start and warm your car in Neutral . Just some friendly advise you can take to the bank. Steve

Yep, 727 and 904's don't pump fluid in park unless the valve body has been modified.
