We have a 72 charger with a 340 , trying to come up with a seal for it. They make two styles of seals , one that is driven in from the back and one that gets drove into the front. I have the smaller one that is drove into the front. the only seal that the parts places list is the larger size.Does anyone know the number for the smaller seal . I found a pic on moparts showing the two styles of cover , mine is like the one on the left.

They are the same seal. The earlier cover (I think up to '73-74?) you drive the seal in from the back. The newer cover you drive it in from the front. In either case, there is only one V8 timing cover seal.

If you look at the pic you can see what I am talking about , the new seal that napa sent has an outside dimension over 3 inch . The front of my seal in the cover measures 2.7 inch . I measured it with it still in the cover that includes the lip , so the hole is smaller that 2.7 inch.

If yours is like the pic on the left that's a magnum cover used from 92 up. I'm not positive but I'd guess it won't even work right because it's designed for a reverse rotation water pump. Sounds like you need the LA style cover. If you plan on using the magnum reverse rotation serpentine system you need a seal for a 92-up 318 or 360 magnum.

I never noticed these pics until after I posted my previous comment. The 2nd picture is of the 69 and older style. You can identify it by the timing indicator on the pass. side. That is different than the one in the link to Moparts that you say yours is like. You need to look at things closer and figure out which cover you actually have.

I was told that there was two style of seals. I was misinformed there is only one style , mine drives in from the back and the cover made it look like it had a lip and drove in from the front. I just put on a repair sleeve on the balancer because it had a wear groove and that took care of the leak , Thanks guys!

Ok. I was hoping you'd get it figured out...lol My next step was to say Napa gave you the wrong seal (or boxed wrong)...
