the snow is no problem. It's the ice. the highways went from nothing to a big sheet of ice in less than 2 hours. \

That's funny. But the truth is, Atlanta got 1" off ice followed by 3"plus of snow. They also failed to prepare when NOAA gave the winter storm warning. Atlanta is pretty well prepared with snow equipment, actually. They usually get a fair amount. now the Macon area where we are, we got about 1/4" of ice and 2" of snow. We are totally unprepared for that. It's very uncommon for us to get enough to cover roads. The media loves to make snowballs outta things.

it was definetly pretty unusual how the further south you the worse it got. here in Gainesville the back roads got pretty sketchy, but the main roads weren't that bad.

I grew up in the mountains of Virginia, where it snows almost everyday this time of year. HOWEVER, I seriously believe every new SUV needs to come with a sign across the middle of the steering wheel. It should read.

"Attention, four wheel drive does not mean you can drive like you stole it on snow and ice, slow down."

Almost every wreck I see in the winter is some 4X4 SUV on its top, or side.

Up north we just learn to drive on the ice....or race.....yes, that's a frozen lake :-D

Hell, I usually take my newest vehicle out on the first storm every winter and deliberatly go a little crazy with It just so I get a feel for it on the snow and ice. Believe me, It helps when you get into one of those "Oh Crap" situations. And we don't travel in wintertime without some sand, a shovel, a blanket and a cell phone.

And 4wheel drive don't mean 4 wheel stop...

66340 I know you guys up in the upper mid-west get a ton of snow, but I had seen on this mornings news a huge pile up somewhere up there in your neck of the woods. It was caught on the traffic cam and looked like a demolition derby. It was on I-35 near Forest Lake. You can watch vid.

Chuckman I agree 100%. Last spring my youngest son and I were heading to our camp north of us and at a certain point conditions change to the extreme. I stayed in right lane at a steady pace and saw this suv come up in the hammer lane moving. I told my son watch this and sure enough it got into deep slush and started to loose control and next thing you know right down into the median.
