Spark to plugs?

What is a good way to make sure you have spark to the spark plugs without cranking the motor?

I am going to start my engine for the first time, but I might as well make sure before I crank it that the plugs have power.


EDIT: I guess I hit the wrong forum button, as this is a 408 small block, but it is a pretty general question.

With electric ignition you can wire the distributer up while it's out of the engine, turn on the key, then turn the distributor. Lay the cap end of the coil wire on the engine and it should jump.

I think only points need the distributor to be grounded.
