speedo cable install

I am trying to replace the speedo cable on my 64 dart. I go it into the trans and through the firewall, but now I can't get the inner cable far enough into the speedo to screw on the retainer. Does anyone know just how much inner is supposed to be showing on the speedo end?

Never mind - I pulled the trans end out and installed the upper end, then plugged in the trans end - it works, Hallelujah!
