I have a 72 duster with a 904.

My cable didnt have a speedo gear on it when I got it (I have to get one)
I have it just sitting in the tranny so I didnt have an open hole in the side of my trans

....I noticed my speedo cable has a melted spot on it.

I see tranny fluid dripping out of the bad spot of the cables sheething.

my question is.....when the speedo gear is attached to the end of the cable, does fluid have access to the inside of the cable still and would leak from the bad spot in the sheething? or does the speedo gear seal off any fluid access to the inside of the cable?

any help would be appreciated,thanks

Yes the speedo housing has a seal in it to keep trans. fluid out of the cable. It goes right where the cable screws into the housing.

Alright,cool.....good to know.

My cable is in otherwise great shape beside the burned spot through the plastic sheething where it must have laid on the exhaust years ago or something and I don't want to replace the cable (right now).

Now I just need to figure out what speedo gear I need.

I was TOLD my 8 3/4 has a 4.10 posi in it but I need to confirm that before I go buying a gear .......and before I confirm it....I need to remeber the process it takes to coming up with the answer to that LOL....turn the wheel so many times and times it by the number of turns of the pinion...BLAHBLAHBLAH I forget now lol

Just replaced the speedo gear (and adapter seals) in my Scamp w/ 4.30 gears. Bought a 44 tooth gear from Cope and the seals. Unfortunately the more odd ball gears are expensive ($70+ vs $20 or so).

Here's a diagram of the adapter. Your leak is most likely the small oil seal...but the O-ring seal could be dry too if it's old...both should be replaced when swapping the gear.

As well here's a speedo pinion chart. Match up your tire height to your gear ratio and you've got corresponding gear part# you need, the last 2 dig are the # of teeth on the gear....if you can find one that's within 1-2 teeth it'll get you pretty close w/ speedometer accuracy.

SPEEDO GEAR CHART

Tire Size
------------------24"------26"--------28"---------30"

2.76 gears 2538930 2538928 2538926 2538924
2.94 gears 2538932 2538930 2538928 2538926
3.21 gears 2538935 2538933 2838931 2838929
3.55 gears 2538939 2538936 2538933 2538931
3.91 gears 2538943 2538940 2538937 2538935
4.10 gears 2538945 2538942 2538939 2538936
4.30 gears 2538944 2538941 2538938
4.56 gears 2538945 2538943 2538940

Again, Cope Trans. hooked me up with what I needed!
