My speedometer moves smoothly at speed, but doesn't go all the way to zero unless I tap on the dash. I assume the cause is friction in the needle itself, not the cable. Is it possible to lubricate the needle without ruining the gauge?

I do not know the history. WD40 turns to pine sap with age, same with 3in1.
I would try to loosen the nut on the cable a bit first. That worked on my old Studebaker.

yea its needs some lube and while your at it lube the brass bushing for the speedo cable

Don't stop there lube the whole inner speedo cable its a part of your maintance.

I use a liquid silicone lube for delicate stuff like that, and it seems to work well.
Actually used for shock absorber oil for RC trucks and cars so you can get it at hobby stores that carry these types of items.

Yes... Mine did the same . I took the cable out of its sleeve and put graftite

greese on it and it took care of the issue.
