They're not. But people find a way. So much so that parts are now offered.

I've had a couple that the cone had dug into the housing and once the cone bottoms out it slips. I grind the end off the cone so it has some clearance and shim the other side.

I get them at the Ford dealer. They come in a package of; chit I forget how many....... maybe 4. Sorry no PN.
I showed up at the counter,with a side gear and the old-timer reached back and when it came back, there was the right part in his palm; That's my kinda parts man.
I set the turning torque to minimum 100 ftlbs with the correct oil pre-installed. Maximum 120 or it will be a spool on the street.

I always use the shim kit for the GM 8.2 rear end. I get it from Summit. I forget how many shims come in the kit, but it's a lot.

This is the kit I use right here:

Enough in there for several jobs.
