Starting spot for jets...

-
My 418 doesn't seem want much different jetting than the 340. It's a 6-pack, but the jetting is almost identical. Considerably smaller than what you are talking about. Would be interesting to see where you end up at.

will post back when i get it worked out. i have a big list of stuff to do.. just no motivation. the cold just really shuts me down now. I wanna pull my interior and fix some stuff.. alignment.. new front wheel studs, new engine.. go through the trans for some upgrades.. umm and like 10 other things i'm forgetting :)

Rignt now i am just keeping it together so i can still drive it if i feel like it..

Most of the stuff i wanna do aren't really long jobs. just need to get to it..

The 318 actually runs really good.. but the bottom end was just a $300 facebook thing to get it running.. no weird noises but the cam bearings are... questionable :) very flakey

They all vary, no hard & fast rule. While the signal is 'smaller' from a smaller engine, it also doesn't need as much fuel because the cyl size is smaller & contains less air, so less fuel.

Just curous if anyone has an opinion on where i should start with jets.. Just bought a new carb and it's a bit large for my current motor (bought it for the next motor but want to use it for now) Which will be a 408..

850 with annular boosters..
Current motor is a 318 with trick flows and a howards roller 232@.50

Carb came with 78/86 which is gonna be way too big.. Was thinking 68/76?

will tune with a AFR gauge when i get it installed.. just wanna start in the right area.. And time to blow $100 on a jet kit.. :(
You said in first post it's for a later 408.
Noone rereads before they post.
You can probably make it work. It won't be perfect but you wantvto live with it you can.
Just figure it out, as everyone on here will tell you smaller carb ad nauseum.

yeah.. knew how it would go :) I'm gonna throw in 68/74s and see how it goes from there...

Don't waste your time with Hughes.. Get a blueprint, buy once cry once. The 408/465Hp is an animal

Holly calibrates there stuff at sea level I think, then they have guidelines to where you go from there based on your altitude. Something like one bump for every 500 or 1000 feet. You'd need to look it up I'm afraid as I don't have it in front of me. Lot's of talk here in the past on using AFR gauges and how they can "lie" so look do some searching to find that. I agree with @RustyRatRod though, that's an awfully big carb for that engine. Maybe start with a 600 which will give you way better low speed velocity of the air fuel charge.
Ok. Sounds interesting. So you are will the carb or muti carb set up that everyone says runs inherently lean on most everything. Run richer below sea level? And be closer to right?
No not being funny the street I front my home is 7 feet below sea level. But dry as a bone as we have a massively levee system. When it rains it must be pumped out or would fill up like a bowl.
